📋 Summary

The Unfair Share: Turning the Tables on Greed

Introduction: The Corruption at the Palace Gates

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear narrates a timeless folktale titled "The Unfair Share." The story explores the themes of greed, justice, and the power of wit. Set in a kingdom governed by a "kind and generous" queen, the narrative exposes a systemic problem: the royal gatekeeper, a "crooked, unscrupulous man," has been exploiting citizens in need. He demands that anyone seeking the queen's help must agree to a 50-50 split of whatever gift they receive. Because he is in a position of power, the peasants fear that "no one would believe them," allowing his "underhanded hijinks" to continue unchecked.

The Farmer’s Ingenious Plan

A humble farmer, struggling after a "miserable" harvest where his crops were "ravaged by rats and mice," decides to approach the queen for assistance. Unlike those who came before him, the farmer is warned by his father about the gatekeeper’s greed. Determined to "teach that squirrely scoundrel a lesson," the farmer concocts a clever plan. Upon reaching the palace, he encounters the gatekeeper, who immediately demands his customary "half of whatever gift" the farmer receives. The farmer, displaying foresight, insists on formalizing this arrangement with a written contract, which the greedy gatekeeper signs with joy, oblivious to the trap being set.

The Unexpected Request

Inside the palace, the queen offers the farmer any gift he desires. The farmer makes three highly unusual requests: 2,000 pounds of manure to fertilize his soil, two dozen snakes to deal with the "pesky rodents" plaguing his farm, and, most perplexingly, two weeks in the "dank and dreary palace dungeon." The queen, though confused, grants these requests. As he is being led away, the farmer drops the contract, which the queen discovers. Upon learning of the gatekeeper's "underhanded" behavior, she realizes the farmer’s true intent.

Justice Served

The queen’s reaction is swift and decisive. She summons the gatekeeper and informs him that because he made a contract to receive half of the farmer's gifts, he must now accept his "fair share." The gatekeeper is thrown into the dungeon, forced to live with the 2,000 pounds of manure and two dozen snakes—a poetic punishment for his avarice. The farmer, meanwhile, is rewarded by the queen for his "wit and wisdom" with riches, and the gatekeeper is forced to return all the wealth he had "unrightfully taken" from other citizens.

Conclusion: The Moral of the Story

"The Unfair Share" serves as a narrative reminder that while greed may offer short-term gains, it often blinds the perpetrator to their own vulnerability. By using the gatekeeper's own greed against him, the farmer not only secures his own future but restores justice to the kingdom, ensuring that "what once was half was made whole again." The story encourages listeners to think creatively when faced with unfairness and highlights the importance of integrity and sharing.
