Urban mining is far from simple. It faces several "technological and economic bottlenecks":

  • Complexity of Waste: Modern products are often glued, welded, or coated with composites, making separation time-consuming and difficult without damaging the materials.
  • Logistics and Emissions: Transporting bulky waste through crowded cities requires coordinated planning to avoid traffic congestion and curb the carbon emissions of diesel-powered collection vehicles.
  • Policy and Responsibility: China’s recent "New National Action Plan" (Gu Fei Shi Tiao) represents a comprehensive, full-chain policy aimed at managing urban mining. By implementing electronic tracking systems and environmental bonds, the government is shifting the burden of cleanup to producers, aiming to recycle over 510 million tons of key resources annually by 2030.
