In this episode, we are going to learn all about horses.
Maybe you've ridden or pet a pony or watched horses galloping across a field or seen them pulling carriages.
Horses have been our partners for thousands of years.
But did you know that horses haven't always looked the way they do today?
The very first horse ancestor, which lived about 55 million years ago, was only about the size of a medium dog.
It had toes instead of hooves, lived in forests instead of open plains and would hardly be recognizable as a horse at all.
Over millions of years, as forests became grasslands and the world changed around them, horses changed too.
Growing larger, faster, and developing those distinctive hooves.
Humans domesticated horses much more recently than dogs, about 6,000 years ago instead of 15,000.
But that partnership changed everything.
Horses gave us the ability to travel farther and faster than ever before.
They helped us plow fields, move heavy loads, and explore new places.
The history of human civilization is deeply connected to the history of horses.
We are going to travel through time to see how horses evolved from tiny forest browsers into the powerful runners we know today.
We'll discover how horses behave and communicate, and why understanding that they're prey animals helps explain everything from why they spook easily to why they sleep standing up.
We'll explore their remarkable bodies, from those huge eyes that see almost everything to their legs that are built like springs for speed.
And we'll meet the wonderful variety of horses in the world today.
From the tiniest miniature horses to massive draft horses that can weigh over a ton.
And yes, we'll learn what makes a pony different from a horse.

Every part of that horse, from the tip of its nose to the end of its tail, is perfectly designed for one thing awareness and speed.
That's millions of years of evolution in motion.
Ready to meet the horse family, past and present?
Let's get started.
Horses haven't always looked the way they do today.
In fact, the very first horse ancestor would probably surprise you.
It was really tiny, lived in forests, and had toes instead of hooves.
This horse ancestor was Eohippus, also called Hierocotherum, which lived about 55 million years ago.
This little creature was only about the size of a medium dog, maybe 35 to 50 centimeters tall at the shoulder.
Instead of the single hoof we see on modern horses, Eohippus had four toes on its front feet and three on its back feet, each with a small hoof-like nail.
It lived in dense forests, browsing on soft leaves and fruit. with an arched back and a short neck.
Scientists have found Eohippus fossils in both North America and Europe, showing us what the earliest horse ancestors looked like.
Over millions of years, Earth's climate shifted.
Forests gradually gave way to open grasslands.
This created huge challenges for horse ancestors.
Grasses are much tougher to chew than soft forest leaves.
They require different teeth.
And on open plains with nowhere to hide, being spotted by a predator meant you needed to run really fast.
Slowly, over millions of years, horses adapted to this new world.
The changes happened gradually through many intermediate species.
Around 40 million years ago, Mesohippus appeared slightly bigger than Eohippus and with three toes on all feet.
Then came Marykippus, about 17 million years ago, which was even larger and had started eating grass instead of just leaves.
Its teeth changed too, developing high crowns with hard enamel ridges, perfect for grinding tough grass.
About 12 million years ago, Pliohippus emerged with one large central toe that had become a proper hoof, though it still had small side toes.
Finally, around 4 million years ago, Equaus appeared, the modern horse.
It had one hoof per foot, stood tall, and was built for running across open plains.
Why did these changes happen?
Each adaptation solved a specific problem.
Multiple toes became a single hoof because one strong hoof is faster and more efficient than several toes.
Less energy is lost with each stride.
Small bodies became large ones because bigger meant longer legs, which meant longer strides and faster running to escape predators.
Forest dwelling turned into plains living because that's where the food grew.
And teeth designed for soft leaves transformed into high-crowned teeth that keep growing throughout life.
Because grass is so tough, it wears teeth down constantly.
One thing that is interesting is that horses actually evolved in North America over those 50 million years.
They migrated to Asia and Europe across ancient land bridges.
But then, about 10000 years ago, horses went completely extinct in North America, likely due to rapid climate change and human expansion.
When Spanish explorers brought horses back to the Americas in the 1500s, they were actually reintroducing an animal to its homeland.
So today's wild Mustangs in the American West are descendants of domesticated horses that escaped, not the original wild horses.
Through all these changes, some things stayed the same.
Horses were always herbivores, always herd animals who found safety in numbers and always alert and watchful for danger.
Every horse pony, donkey and zebra alive today traces its roots back to Equus, the final stop in the long evolutionary journey from the tiny Eohippus to the animals we recognize now.
Over millions of years, horses shifted from forest browsers to open-plane runners shaped by evolution for speed and sharp awareness.
And the ancient prey animal instinct still affects how modern horses behave today.
How horses behave comes back to one fact.
They're prey animals.
For millions of years, staying alive meant staying alert and running at the first sign of danger.
When scared, a horse's first response is flight.
Run first, ask questions later.
They're naturally hypervigilant. always watching, listening, smelling for threats.
Safety lives in numbers.
A lone horse is vulnerable.
Even domesticated horses in safe pastures carry these ancient survival instincts.
Horses are highly social and need companionship.
Herds establish hierarchies. pecking orders where each horse knows its place.
They typically follow an experienced lead mare who knows where to graze and when to flee.
Horses strengthen bonds through mutual grooming, nibbling each other's withers and shoulders.
Young foals learn by watching.
Horses are expert communicators, even though they don't make sounds as often as dogs do.
Most of their communication happens through body language.
Their ears tell you a lot.
Ears pointed forward means alert and interested.
Ears pinned back means angry or fearful.
And ears swiveling around in different directions mean they're listening to sounds from all around them.
Their tails communicate too.
Swishing usually means annoyed, often at flies.
Raised means excited or alert.
Tucked under means scared or submissive.
And relaxed means calm.
Watch a horse's eyes and you'll learn even more.
Soft, relaxed eyes mean the horse is calm.
Wide eyes with the white showing means frightened.
Half-closed eyes means sleepy and content.
Lared nostrils signal alertness or excitement, while relaxed nostrils mean calm.
A horse's whole posture speaks.
Head held high means alert.
Head low means relaxed. and pawing at the ground often means impatient or frustrated.
When horses do use their voices, each sound means something specific.
A neigh or whinny is like calling out, where are you, to other horses.
A knicker is a soft, rumbling greeting often given to friendly humans or when food arrives.
A squeal is a sharp back off warning to other horses.
A snort is an alert sound that can also mean all clear.
And a blow, a loud exhale through the nostrils, is often a greeting or just clearing the nose.
Horses remember people, places, and experiences for years.
They're intelligent, capable of learning complex tasks, surprisingly good at reading human emotions and can form deep bonds with humans and other horses.
Many people wonder why horses sleep standing up.
Horses have a special system in their legs called the stay apparatus, tendons and ligaments that can lock their leg joints in place.
This lets them doze while standing without using any muscle effort.
It's a prey animal adaptation that keeps them ready to run at a moment's notice.
But here's what many people don't know.
Horses do need to lie down for deep REM sleep, about two to three hours per day.
In a herd, you'll often see some horses standing guard while others lie down to sleep deeply.
Horses' prey animal awareness has shaped more than behavior.
It shaped their entire bodies, engineering marvels designed for detecting danger and escaping fast.
A horse's body is an engineering marvel perfectly designed for one thing detecting danger and running away fast.
Horses' eyes are massive.
Each one is nearly as large as a whale's eye, making them the biggest eyes of any land mammal.
But size isn't the remarkable part.
Position is.
Those eyes sit on the sides of the head, giving horses nearly 360 degree vision.
They can see almost everything around them without moving their head at all.
There are just two small blind spots, directly in front of the nose and directly behind the tail.
This wraparound vision means a grazing horse can watch for predators in almost every direction at once.
But judging depth directly in front is harder, which is why horses sometimes startle at jumps.
They're heading straight toward.
The ears work like independent radar dishes.
Each can rotate 180 degrees.
They move separately, so a horse can focus on sounds from different directions at the same time, one ear tracking a noise behind, while the other listens ahead.
Horses hear higher frequencies than we do, catching sounds we'd completely miss.
A horse's legs are long, powerful and built for speed, but most of what looks like a leg is actually just bone and tendon.
There's no muscle below the knee.
The muscles bunch up high near the body, which means less weight swinging with each stride, more efficient and faster.
The hoof itself is a single modified toenail made of hard keratin, the same material as your fingernails.
Inside sits a digital cushion that absorbs shock and a V-shaped structure called the frog that acts as both shock absorber and blood circulation pump.
Horses move in four gates.
Walking is the slowest, about 6 to 7 kilometers per hour or 4 miles per hour.
Trot is medium speed, roughly 13 to 19 kilometers per hour or 8 to 12 miles per hour.
Cantor moves faster, around 19 to 24 kilometers per hour or 12 to 15 miles per hour.
Gallop is full speed, typically 40 to 48 kilometers an hour, or 25 to 30 miles per hour for most horses, though racehorses can exceed 65 kilometers an hour or 40 plus miles per hour.
Horses have a surprisingly small stomach holding only 75 to 15 liters or 2 to 4 gallons, so they must eat frequently.
They prefer grazing 16 to 20 hours a day.
Their intestines stretch about 21 meters or 70 feet in total, with bacteria in the hindgut breaking down tough plant fiber through fermentation.
Their teeth keep growing throughout life because grinding grass wears them down.
Their hearts weigh 36 to 45 kilograms, or 8 to 10 pounds, and racehorse hearts can exceed 55 kilograms or 12 pounds.
Horses breathe only through the nose, never the mouth, which is why you never see a panting horse.
Average riding horses stand 142 to 173 centimeters, or 14 to 17 hands tall.
A hand equals 1016 centimeters or 4 inches, measured at the withers, the high point of the shoulder.
They typically weigh 410 to 545 kilograms, or 900 to 1200 pounds, and can comfortably carry about 20 of their body weight.
With these incredible physical adaptations, horses come in an amazing variety of sizes and types, from tiny ponies to to massive draft horses.
There are over 300 different horse breeds in the world, each developed for specific purposes.
We get a lot of questions about what a pony really is.
The answer has to do with height.
A pony is any horse that stands 147 centimeters tall or less.
That's the same as 14.2 hands or 58 inches.
A hand is just a horse measure equal to 10.16 centimeters or 4 inches.
But ponies aren't just small horses.
Their bodies are built differently.
They have shorter legs, thicker manes and tails, and stockier bodies.
They are often tougher than full-sized horses and can handle harsher weather and rougher living conditions.
Many also have strong, bold personalities.
Horse people jokingly call this pony attitude.
Some well-known pony breeds include Shetlands, Very small but incredibly strong.
Welsh ponies.
Elegant, friendly and athletic.
And Connemara.
Sturdy ponies that are great jumpers.
Light horses, the kinds that most people ride, make up many of the breeds you might know.
Thoroughbreds are tall and sleek.
Bred for racing. and every one of them can be traced back to three stallions from the 1700s.
Arabians are one of the oldest horse breeds and are famous for their stamina and their unique slightly dished faces.
Quarter horses, strong and fast, over short distances, are the most popular breed in the United States.
Morgans are compact and versatile and all go back to one amazing stallion.
Paints and pintos stand out because of their colorful spotted coats.
Draft horses are built for power.
They're huge, muscular, and usually very gentle.
Clydesdales can stand 163 pounds.
183 centimeters or 16 to 18 hands tall and have long feathery hair around their ankles.
Percherons originally from France are large but elegant and are usually gray or black.
Belgians are incredibly strong and often have a golden coat.
These giant horses can weigh 820 to 1,090 kilograms, or 1,800 to 2,400 pounds.
In the past, draft horses pulled plows and wagons and even helped move heavy buildings.
Humans bred horses for racing, pulling, farm work, war, showing, and jumping.
Different climates, demanded different adaptations.
Over 6000 years of selective breeding created incredible variety, but all share the same species classification, the same basic needs, that same ancient prey animal awareness.
From the tiny Eohippus to towering Clydesdales, from wild Mustangs to gentle therapy ponies.
Horses have traveled an incredible evolutionary journey.
