Did you know that one of the most famous piano pieces of the 21st century is actually impossible to play?
In fact, anyone would need 18 hands to play it.
That's nine times as many hands as I actually have.
Rush E has become one of the most famous piano pieces of the 21st century, and it's literally impossible to play.
So, why is Rush E so popular, and will it change the future of music?
Well, Rushie is not just a fun song.
It might actually be a sign that music is changing and will keep changing in unexpected ways in the future.
But let's start from the beginning.
Sheep Music Boss wrote Rush E in 2018 and posted it on their YouTube channel.
And since then, it has gotten over 110 million views.
What?
Rush E has over 30,000 notes with many hard chords.
Played really fast.
Some of the chords include more than 10 notes.
Other chords include 88 notes.
That's all the keys on a piano played at the same time.
Inspired by Rush E, Sheep Music Boss and others have written many other Rush songs, such as Rush E2, Rush E3, as well as Rush A B C, D and so on through the music scale, all following the same basic rules.
My favorite is Rush Skeletons.
Would you believe me if I told you that there's a piano that can play Rush E on its own?
YouTube engineer Mark Rober built a piano named Chopsticks that can play Rush E, So in addition to talking, he can play simple songs like that, but also like really complicated songs.
It was very close to catching on fire.
But what if humans wanted to play Rush E?
Some musicians have created a playable version of the impossible song.
But if you tried to play the original piece, you couldn't do it on your own.
You would need to ask eight of your friends to help you in order to play all 88 notes at the same time.
Okay, maybe playing the piano as a group of nine people is a bit silly.
But thanks to computer programs, you don't need nine people to play Rush E.
That's what makes Rush E so much different from most piano pieces you've heard.
Most music composers write music thinking about how the musician will actually play the songs.
When sheet music boss wrote Rush E, they knew a computer doesn't need 88 fingers in order to play all of the notes at once.
Technology opens the door to a style of music that composers from centuries ago would never have been able to dream of.
That has me wondering...
Is Russia just the beginning?
As technology changes, maybe the future of music will continue to open new possibilities of what we can create.
