📋 Summary

The Treasured Axe: A Lesson in Integrity

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Sheer presents a timeless fable titled "The Treasured Axe." This narrative, adapted from global folklore, serves as a poignant reminder that honesty is a virtue far more precious than material wealth.

The Honest Woodchopper

The story follows a humble and hardworking woodchopper who supports his family through his daily labor in the forest. His most prized possession is his "trusty iron axe," an inherited tool he has used for years. While working near a "swift, deep river," a moment of misfortune occurs: the axe slips from his grip and plunges into the water.

Distraught by the loss of his livelihood, the woodchopper is visited by the "goddess of the river." She offers him three different axes—one of bronze, one of solid silver, and one of pure gold—to see if he will claim them. Despite his poverty, the woodchopper remains steadfastly honest. He repeatedly tells the goddess, "My axe is simple and plain," refusing to claim treasures that do not belong to him. Because of his integrity, he is ultimately rewarded not only with the return of his own "well-worn iron hatchet" but also with the gift of the bronze, silver, and gold axes, which the goddess bestows upon him for being "the most humble, hard-working, and honest person she'd ever encountered."

The Deceit of the Greedy Farmer

The narrative takes a sharp turn when a neighbor, a "lazy" and "deceitful" farmer, hears of the woodchopper’s good fortune. Driven by "greed and jealousy," the farmer attempts to replicate the woodchopper’s experience. He goes to the river and deliberately drops his own axe, hoping to trick the goddess into rewarding him with the same treasures.

When the goddess appears and offers him the bronze, silver, and golden axes, the farmer shamelessly lies, claiming each one is his. Unlike the woodchopper, whose honesty was born of a pure heart, the farmer’s actions were rooted in "deceit" and a desire for unearned gain. The consequence of his dishonesty is swift: when he returns home, he discovers his satchel is completely "empty." He loses the treasures he tried to steal, as well as his own original axe, leaving him with nothing.

Conclusion

"The Treasured Axe" emphasizes that true value is found in one's character rather than in possessions. While the woodchopper’s honesty led to abundance, the farmer’s lack of integrity left him "empty-handed." As the podcast suggests, this story invites listeners to reflect on what they truly treasure in life, emphasizing that the rewards of being truthful and humble are far more lasting than the glittering allure of gold.
