Hi, Sam here. Welcome to Radioheadspace and to Wednesday.
Today, I want to talk about joy.
There are so many practices that are meant to cultivate pleasant emotions like joy and I've made a practice of looking for joy wherever I am.
Like when I'm riding at a coffee shop, I feel a sense of ease seeing other people studying and talking and it brings me joy to know others are enriching their lives with knowledge and real conversation.
I also find joy in seeing others help each other and when I see parents being patient and loving with their children, there are so many opportunities for us to catch joy from what's going on around us.
This practice took a while to become a habit for me and there are times when accessing joy for others can be challenging.
If we're unsatisfied in certain areas of our lives, we may feel resentment or jealousy bubble up when we see others feeling happy and that's okay.
In those moments, we can bring compassion to how we feel and send loving kindness to that part of us that wishes to be joyful and at ease too.
Sympathetic joy describes the practice of finding joy in others' joy and rejoicing in others' good fortune.
We can practice this both on and off the cushion, meaning whether we're meditating or not.
In meditation, you can think of someone you care about and then imagine them feeling joy and at ease.
Think of the things they like to do or see them spending time with people they can share a laugh with.
Then you can wish for their happiness to continue to grow.
You can send phrases of kindness like, may your happiness continue to grow and grow and may it last for as long as possible.
And then linger with the joy that this brings you in the moment, noticing sensations of ease and warmth in your body.
One of my favorite teachers and psychologists, Rick Hansen, explains that in order to hardwire happiness, we should savor joyful times by taking stock of as many sensory details as we can and lingering unpleasant sensations in our body for a few minutes when good things happen.
This helps us to develop the habit of feeling and remembering joy, helping our brain default to savoring pleasant experiences instead of dwelling on unpleasant ones.
There's almost always some small delight we can find in the interactions happening around us.
For example, I love to delight in dogs when I see them on a walk or in a car or on someone's social media page.
Even though I don't have a dog of my own, I'll go to the dog park with my friend and her dog just to take in the joy of dogs playing with each other.
When we can find joy anywhere, the focus on what we lack fades into the background.
We can also find ways to celebrate others in our lives, not just with the big events like birthdays and weddings, but small accomplishments like receiving a good grade or tackling a big project at work or having the courage to engage in a difficult conversation.
Another way of cultivating joy in our lives is to be generous.
We can take time to think about big or small acts of kindness that we can offer to close friends or even strangers.
So take a moment right now and think about someone that you'd like to celebrate or someone you'd like to show generosity to.
And if you feel too far from joy right now and it just seems impossible to access, that's totally fine.
You can use phrases of loving kindness as a gentle invitation, opening the door to one day feeling joy.
You can use phrases like, may I open to joy and generosity or may I someday soon feel generous and joyful.
Not forcing any mood, but just inviting that possibility.
And if you're having trouble adding joy to your busy schedule, my friend and colleague Eve has a finding time for joy meditation in the Headspace app.
So I hope you get a chance to catch joy today and I'll see you back here tomorrow.
