📋 Summary

The Tale of the Winter Wizard: A Journey to Restore the Seasons

In this classic episode of the Stories Podcast, host Amanda Weldon narrates a charming Bulgarian myth titled "Which Wizard Winter?" The story follows a young girl named Silva, who finds her village trapped in an endless, suffocating winter caused by a malevolent force.

The Unprecedented Snowfall

Initially, Silva wishes for snow, hoping for the traditional "wet and heavy" flakes perfect for "snowmen and snowball fights." However, the weather takes a dangerous turn. The snow becomes so deep that it buries the village roofs, forcing the townspeople to carve tunnels just to navigate the "mountain of snow." As the cold intensifies and the villagers struggle to survive, they realize that the natural cycle has been disrupted. They suspect that the "Winter Witch" has enchanted "Father Frost," the ancient wizard responsible for ushering in and out the seasons.

A Heroic Ascent

Recognizing that the adults are too exhausted and physically hindered by the deep drifts to reach the mountain peak, Silva volunteers for the mission. Because she is "small and light enough," she can walk atop the snow, whereas others would need to tunnel for weeks. Armed with a "slim silver tube"—a magical whistle left by Father Frost for emergencies—Silva embarks on a perilous journey up the mountain to save her village.

Confronting the Winter Witch

The Winter Witch, who monitors the world through an "orb of solid ice," attempts to stop Silva with a sleeping spell. Silva nearly succumbs to the magic, but the cold touch of the silver whistle against her skin serves as a reminder of "hot chocolate, spring breezes and summer suns," jolting her awake. Upon reaching the wizard’s cabin, Silva finds Father Frost snoring under the witch's influence.

When confronted, the arrogant witch mocks Silva, claiming, "You may have woken up but you're still just a child." Undeterred, Silva blows the whistle. Though the witch claims it makes no noise, the sound is heard by Father Frost, who awakens from his enchanted slumber.

The Restoration of Spring

Father Frost confronts the witch, asserting that "all good things have their time to begin and their time to end." He uses the power of the whistle to shatter the witch’s icy orb. Exposed to the light of the sun, the witch vanishes "like a snowflake on a stove." With the threat neutralized, Father Frost provides Silva with a magical wooden sled to return home. As she descends, the storm clouds part, and the village begins to thaw. The story concludes with the return of spring, as Silva reflects on the wizard's wisdom: "All good things have their time to begin and their time to end."
