📋 Summary

The Singing Witch: A Summary and Analysis

Introduction: The Wizard's Mishap

The story begins with Balazar the Blue, a great wizard who, through sheer carelessness while brewing a potion, accidentally transforms himself into a creature covered in "magenta feathers" and rendered "blind as a bat." Desperate for a cure, he summons his three children: his arrogant, bookish sons, Frog and Newt, and his neglected daughter, Fenny. Unlike her brothers, Fenny is a natural witch, comfortable in the bogs and woods, often appearing disheveled with "gnarled mess" hair that her brothers cruelly mock.

The Quest for the Peacock Feather

Balazar tasks his children with retrieving a peacock feather to complete his antidote, promising a reward of "potent lizard tales" and "a vial of the blackest wolfsbane." While the brothers fail due to their loud, clumsy nature, Fenny—who is on a "first-name basis" with the local birds—successfully retrieves a feather from a friend. Envious and spiteful, Frog and Newt intercept her on her way back. When Fenny refuses to hand over the feather, they cast a spell, transforming her into a "reed" by the bog, effectively erasing her from their father's life.

The Reed’s Lament

Trapped as a reed for weeks, Fenny is unable to speak or use magic. Her only hope lies in the wind. By channeling her voice through the blowing wind, she eventually attracts a passing farmer. Recognizing something supernatural about the singing plant, the farmer digs her up and crafts her into a "simple flute." This act of transformation allows Fenny to reclaim her voice, albeit through the farmer's breath. When the farmer plays the flute, Fenny uses the music to communicate her identity and her plight: "Hello Dad it's me your daughter Fenny... Frog and Newt are immature... They turned me into a reed."

Justice and Resolution

The farmer brings the flute to Balazar’s tower. Despite the brothers’ desperate attempts to stop him, the farmer plays the flute for the wizard. Upon hearing the truth, Balazar is devastated and horrified by his sons' betrayal. He immediately uses his magic to reverse the spell, restoring Fenny to her original form.

The Final Punishment

The story concludes with a satisfying reversal of fortune. Balazar, serving as both a loving father and a strict judge, decides that Frog and Newt must be grounded in a way that fits their wizardly status. Fenny is granted the power to choose their fate, transforming them into a "brush" and a "comb." For three weeks, Fenny uses them to groom her hair, finally taming her famous "gnarled mess" into locks that were "smooth and shining." Through this, the brothers learn the consequences of their bullying, and Fenny finds a way to turn her past struggles into a source of personal care and triumph.
