The Tale of the Runaway Cats: A Journey of Loyalty and Fortune

In this classic episode of the Stories Podcast, host Amanda Weldon narrates "Runaway Cats," an adaptation of a Japanese folktale that explores themes of companionship, sacrifice, and the unexpected turns of fate. The story follows two feline protagonists, Goan and Koma, whose deep bond leads them on a transformative journey.

The Meeting of Two Worlds

Goan, a "mighty kitten" with "shaggy fur" and "green eyes," lives with a music teacher, while Koma, a "petite" and "delicate" kitten with fur "soft as silk," resides with a wealthy lady. Despite their different environments, they meet under a cherry tree and develop an inseparable friendship. Their desire to live together is thwarted by their owners, who refuse to part with them. Driven by the haiku, "Meeting you was a happy surprise," they make the "decisive" choice to abandon their homes and embrace the uncertainty of the streets to remain together.

The Perils of the Park

Their newfound freedom is quickly threatened in a park, where they are cornered by a ferocious dog. In a moment of bravery, Goan attempts to protect Koma, but he is trapped and injured. Koma, though "too small to fight," displays immense resourcefulness by yowling for help, which attracts a passing human girl. This girl rescues Goan, but in the ensuing confusion, the two cats are separated. Goan is taken into the "Imperial Gardens" of a palace, while Koma is left alone, searching for her companion outside the "towering wall."

Heroism and Reunion

Life in the palace is a "cat's paradise" for Goan, yet he remains miserable, longing to be reunited with Koma. His life takes a dramatic turn when he spots a "deadly mamushi snake" threatening a young princess. Using the "reflexes sharp from hunting," Goan leaps to save the princess, earning him the title of a "hero kitty."

When the grateful princess asks how she can reward him, Goan seizes the opportunity to lead her to the palace gates. He successfully guides the princess to Koma, who had been waiting faithfully outside. The princess, charmed by their bond, adopts both kittens.

A Happily Ever After

The story concludes with Goan and Koma living within the palace, surrounded by the princess’s growing family. Their journey, which began as a risky escape from their owners, ultimately leads them to a life of safety and prosperity. As the narrator notes, the two cats and the royal family remain "fast friends for the rest of their lives," living together "happily ever after." This tale serves as a poignant reminder that loyalty and courage can turn even the most desperate circumstances into a story of lasting happiness.
