📋 Summary

The Tale of Hamelin: A Lesson in Integrity and Greed

The Infestation of Hamelin

The story begins in the idyllic village of Hamelin, a place defined by its "lazy river" and peaceful farming life. However, this tranquility is shattered when the village is suddenly besieged by a "furry gray stream" of rats. These are not ordinary pets; they are described as "big and mean and mangy" creatures with "cloudy red eyes" that contaminate food supplies and spread illness. The village council, led by a "cunning old mayor," initially attempts to resolve the crisis by hiring professional rat catchers. These experts, armed with "cages and traps and bait and poison," ultimately fail, admitting that the infestation is magical and beyond their capabilities, leaving the village in a state of near-collapse.

The Arrival of the Pied Piper

In the midst of the chaos, a mysterious figure known as the Pied Piper emerges. He is visually striking, dressed in "flowing streams of rainbow silk," and carries a strange, "long and slender" instrument resembling a flute fused with a fishhook. The Piper offers a straightforward bargain: he will rid Hamelin of its rodent problem in exchange for "a thousand guilders." The council, desperate to avoid abandoning their village, agrees to the terms, stipulating that payment will only be rendered once the task is successfully completed.

The Magical Solution and the Betrayal

The Pied Piper executes his task with ease. By playing a melody that seems to "warble and chirp and rumble and whistle," he mesmerizes the rats, leading them in a "strange parade" out of the village and into the mountains. Once the village is rodent-free, the Piper returns to claim his reward. However, the mayor and his council, blinded by greed, decide to renege on their promise. They arrogantly dismiss the Piper, telling him, "It seems to me that the rats are already gone. Why should we pay you now?" They attempt to treat their broken promise as a life lesson for the Piper, instructing him to "get your guilders in advance" next time.

The Consequences of Deceit

The Piper’s reaction is swift and severe. He leaves, only to return the following morning playing his hypnotic melody once more. This time, he brings with him a "great surging tide of endless rats," threatening to re-infest the village. The villagers, terrified by the returning "ocean of rats," realize their leaders' folly. They confront the mayor, demanding he "pay what is owed" and warning that his "greed will doom" them all.

The Resolution

Ultimately, the villagers take matters into their own hands, locating the hidden sack of guilders in the mayor's home and delivering it to the Piper. The Piper accepts the payment, but not before delivering a final, stinging moral: "A deal's a deal, so keep your word." He then leads the rats away for the final time, leaving the villagers of Hamelin to reflect on the importance of integrity. The story serves as a cautionary tale about the high cost of dishonesty and the necessity of honoring one's commitments, emphasizing that while greed may offer a temporary gain, it inevitably leads to a much greater loss.
