Hello, welcome to radio headspace.
It's Eve here and it's Friday.
I hope you can have a restful weekend.
I wanted to end this week by sharing a concept called the maybe principle.
And it starts with the story.
It's the story of the Chinese farmer.
I first heard it from Alan Watts and it goes something like this.
Once upon a time there was a farmer who had a horse.
One day the horse ran away.
His neighbors came to console him and said that's such bad luck.
The farmer simply replied maybe.
A few days later the horse returned bringing with it several wild horses.
The neighbors came back again this time congratulating the farmer on his good fortune and again the farmer said maybe.
The next week the farmer's son was trying to tame one of the wild horses and he fell breaking his leg.
The neighbors came once more again saying how terrible and the farmer once again said maybe.
Shortly after the army came to the village to draft young men for the war but they didn't take the farmer's son because of his broken leg.
The neighbors came by saying what great luck and as you might have guessed the farmer simply replied maybe.
This story really highlights the unpredictability of life.
What seems bad one day could lead to something good and vice versa but as humans we're often quick to label things as good or bad and to assume we know how things will turn out.
That's where mindfulness comes in.
Mindfulness is about being present with whatever is happening right now without immediately labeling or judging it.
The farmer in this story embodies this mindset.
He doesn't rush to conclusions about whether something is good or bad.
Instead he stays open to the unfolding of events accepting each moment as it is.
And I think that's one of the most valuable things mindfulness can teach us.
We don't always have to know the outcome.
We just need to stay present with what is happening.
Trusting that things will evolve.
Often though we're really good at talking ourselves out of trying new things.
How many times have you had an idea or desire to make a change and then immediately thought of all the reasons it won't work.
We have this amazing ability to create entire stories in our mind about why something will fail even before we've given it a real shot.
It's like we're protecting ourselves from disappointment by not trying at all.
But that fear of trying new things that fear of change often comes from wanting certainty.
We want to know how things will play out.
We want control. But as the story of the Chinese farmer shows life is rarely that simple.
Change is a natural part of life and resisting it only creates more tension and fear.
One of the ways mindfulness can help with this is reminding us of the concept of impermanence.
Impermanence teaches us that nothing lasts forever.
Everything is constantly changing.
And while that can be scary at times it can also be incredibly liberating.
If nothing is permanent that means whatever difficulty or discomfort you're experiencing right now will also change.
It also opens us up to the possibility that something good might come out of a situation we're struggling with.
I invite you to take a moment right now and think about a time in your life when something difficult or unexpected happened.
Something that in the moment felt like everything was falling apart.
But then looking back you realized it led to something better or different than you had imagined.
Maybe it was a job you didn't get only to find a better opportunity later or perhaps it was a relationship that ended.
But it allowed you to grow in ways you never thought possible.
Mindfulness teaches us to stay with those difficult moments to observe them without immediately trying to fix or change them.
It's a practice of accepting each moment as it comes without clinging to expectations or outcomes.
So I want to pose a question.
Where in your life can you apply the maybe principle?
Is there something you're resisting or afraid of because you don't know how it will turn out?
Can you practice mindfulness by staying with that uncertainty without rushing to conclusions or trying to control the outcome?
The next time you find yourself in a difficult or uncertain situation see if you can pause, take a mindful breath and remind yourself that it's okay not to know what's next.
Maybe things will work out differently than you imagined and maybe that's exactly what's needed.
I'll leave it there for today.
Thank you so much for listening.
I hope you found these episodes helpful.

It's like going to work on one Thursday morning and thinking to yourself just one more day until Friday.

Then you check your phone quickly and discover today is actually Friday.
So yes, happy Friday, random stranger in the elevator.
Happy Friday indeed!
