📋 Summary

The Chichijima Incident: A Hidden World War II Atrocity

Strategic Importance and Failed Missions

During World War II, the Japanese-held island of Chichijima, located 500 miles south of the Japanese mainland, served as a critical hub for communication and surveillance. The island was "heavily fortified" with 25,000 troops and powerful anti-aircraft guns, making it a strategic nightmare for the American military. Recognizing that an amphibious landing would result in "massive casualties," the U.S. opted for aerial bombardment to destroy the island's two essential radio towers. However, the Japanese forces successfully "repelled every American air raid" for months, leading to deep frustration among U.S. military leadership.

The Survival of George H.W. Bush

In September 1944, a 20-year-old pilot named George—the youngest in the U.S. Navy at the time—was tasked with bombing one of these towers. Despite his plane being "engulfed in flames" after a successful strike, George demonstrated remarkable composure. He defied orders to bail out early, refusing to abandon his crew, Ted and Del, until the plane was far enough from the island to avoid capture. Ultimately, George was the only one to survive the crash; his crew perished when their parachute failed or they died on impact. George was rescued by an American submarine after swimming for two hours, narrowly escaping Japanese patrol boats that were hunting for survivors.

The Secret Atrocities of Chichijima

While George’s survival story is well-known, the fate of eight other airmen who were captured during the same raid remained a "top secret" for 60 years. In 2004, author James Bradley uncovered transcripts from a post-war trial in Guam, revealing a gruesome reality. The Japanese soldiers, embittered by constant American bombing, sought revenge on the prisoners.

Under the orders of General Yoshio Tachibana, a man "notorious for his sadistic tendencies," the prisoners were subjected to horrific torture. Marv Mershon was tied to a tree, beaten, and eventually beheaded. In an act of depravity, Tachibana ordered the removal of Marv’s thigh, which was then cooked and consumed by the officers. As the months passed, Tachibana’s desire for human flesh grew, fueled by the superstition that it would provide "fighting spirit" and health benefits. Other airmen, including Floyd Hall and Earl Vaughn, were executed via bayonet or beheading, with their livers and gallbladders surgically removed and served as meals for the high-ranking officers. In some cases, prisoners were kept alive while body parts were "surgically amputated" to ensure the meat remained fresh.

Historical Aftermath

Following the war, 34 Japanese soldiers, including General Tachibana, were found guilty of war crimes and executed. The surviving American airmen, including George, lived on unaware of the full extent of these horrors for decades. George H.W. Bush, who had survived that day, went on to become the 41st President of the United States, and his son, George W. Bush, became the 43rd. The podcast underscores the chilling reality that had George bailed out just seconds earlier, he would have likely been captured and suffered the same fate as the other eight men, fundamentally altering the course of American history.
