📋 Summary

The Christmas Eve Horror

On December 24, 1992, 18-year-old Danita Gallet, a young mother from Dayton, Ohio, was heading to her mother’s house after a shift at Rally’s. She stopped at a payphone to check on her daughter, unaware that she was being stalked. As her family waited for her arrival, they received a strange, silent phone call. Shortly after, Danita was found murdered, shot five times at point-blank range. Detective Doyle Burke, tasked with the investigation, discovered distinctive .25 caliber aluminum shell casings at the scene—a signature that would soon link this tragedy to a much larger, terrifying crime spree.

A Connection of Chaos

Within 24 hours, another murder occurred: 19-year-old Richmond Maddox was found shot in the head inside his moving vehicle, which had crashed into a tree. Detective Burke, suspecting the crimes were connected, noted that "coincidences rarely occurred" in homicide investigations. The trail grew colder and more complex when the police discovered a missing juvenile, 16-year-old Laura Taylor, who was eventually identified as the ex-girlfriend of the victim. The violence continued with an armed robbery at a convenience store, where Sarah Abraham was shot and killed, and Jones Pettis was wounded. The use of the same .25 caliber ammunition confirmed that a group of "rogue people" was terrorizing the city.

The Discovery of the Wilkerson House

Panic gripped Dayton as the suspects continued their spree, even attempting to murder a woman named Kathy Henderson during a carjacking. The breakthrough came when Sergeant John Huber spotted the stolen vehicle and, through clever investigation, linked it to a residence belonging to Joseph Wilkerson. Upon entering the home, police were met with a "putrid smell" and discovered the decomposing body of Wilkerson, who had been bound to his bed and executed. This gruesome discovery provided the context for the motive: a group of young people had turned murder into a "high."

The Perpetrators and Their Motive

Following a tip from Nicholas Woodson, who feared he was the next target, police apprehended 19-year-old Marvalis Keene, 17-year-old Demarcus Smith, 16-year-old Laura Taylor, and 20-year-old Heather Matthews. During interrogations, the chilling truth emerged. The group had targeted Wilkerson, then Danita Gallet, and others, driven by a twisted belief that "killing was actually quite fun." The group’s dynamic was fueled by a desire for excitement and power, leading them to even execute their own acquaintances, Marvin Washington and Wendy Cuttrill, to prevent them from "snitching."

Justice Served

The four suspects were eventually brought to trial for their horrific actions. The investigation revealed a complete lack of remorse, as the perpetrators viewed their victims as disposable targets in their pursuit of an adrenaline rush. Ultimately, Laura Taylor, Heather Matthews, and Demarcus Smith were sentenced to life in prison. Marvalis Keene, identified as the ringleader who orchestrated the violence, was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 2009. The case remains a haunting reminder of how, as the podcast notes, some criminals exist in reality that mirror the darkest portrayals in horror movies.
