📋 Summary

The Origin of the Chinese Zodiac

In the spirit of the Year of the Snake, the podcast Circle Round explores the folklore behind the Chinese zodiac—a 12-year repeating cycle where each year is represented by a specific animal. According to the legend, the Jade Emperor, the ruler of heaven and earth, sought a way to track time and organize years. He decided to host "The Great Zodiac Race," inviting animals to compete. The first twelve animals to cross a wide, fast-flowing river would earn their place in the zodiac, with their order determined by their finish time.

The Treachery of the Rat

The race began with a "boisterous blur of feathers, fur, and scales." Early on, the Rat, Cat, and Ox took the lead. Because the Rat and Cat were small, they convinced the "burly, brawny" Ox to carry them across the river. However, the Rat’s "crafty" and "clever" nature took over. To ensure his victory, the Rat tricked the Cat by pointing out a fake fish, causing her to fall into the water. Upon reaching the shore, the Rat scurried ahead, becoming the first animal in the zodiac. When the Jade Emperor questioned how such a small animal won, the Rat claimed he was "big in brains."

The Diverse Paths to the Finish Line

The subsequent winners demonstrated a variety of traits and obstacles:

  • Ox (2nd): Though annoyed by the Rat’s trickery, the good-natured Ox accepted his position with dignity.
  • Tiger (3rd): Proved her bravery by persevering through a "whirlpool" that threatened to pull her under.
  • Rabbit (4th): Relied on luck and adaptability; after struggling to swim, he hopped across rocks and rode a log to the finish line.
  • Dragon (5th): Though capable of flying, the Dragon arrived later because he stopped to help a drought-stricken village and saved the Rabbit from the river current.
  • Snake (6th): Remained "inconspicuous" and "mysterious," sliding into the sixth position.
  • Horse (7th): Found a shallow spot to cross, avoiding the water because horses are not "big fans" of it.
  • Goat (8th), Monkey (9th), and Rooster (10th): These three formed a team, using a raft they found. Their success was attributed to the Goat’s appetite (clearing weeds), the Monkey’s nimbleness, and the Rooster’s leadership.
  • Dog (11th): A "loyal and faithful" animal who arrived late only because he was busy enjoying the water.
  • Pig (12th): Being "generous and caring," the Pig stopped for multiple snacks and a nap, narrowly securing the final spot.

The Eternal Rivalry

The story concludes with the tragic arrival of the Cat. Exhausted and sodden, she arrived too late to claim a spot. Upon learning that the Rat—her former friend—had betrayed her, the Cat’s "glittering eyes" filled with rage. She lunged at the Rat, who escaped, beginning a historical enmity. The podcast notes that this is why "cats still chase rats" to this very day, seeking revenge on the "cunning little critter" who stole their place in history. The episode serves as a playful reminder of the personality traits associated with each animal and encourages listeners to discover their own zodiac connection.
