📋 Summary

The Wisdom of Sharing: A Tale of the Wrong Day

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents an enchanting adaptation of a Japanese-inspired folktale, "The Wrong Day." This story serves as a poignant reminder that the true value of wealth lies in our willingness to share it with those less fortunate, rather than hoarding it through deceit.

The Royal Decree

The story begins with a compassionate queen who observes a "stark contrast" between her wealthy subjects and those "whose cupboards were bare." In an effort to "narrow the distance between the haves and the have-nots," she mandates that on the first of every month, the fortunate should provide donations of food. While most citizens embrace this call to charity, one "successful rice merchant" is deeply resentful. Despite his "thriving shop" and "elegant light fixtures," he views the request as an intrusion on his hard-earned success and resolves to give as little as possible.

A Deceptive Strategy

When the royal messenger arrives to collect the donation, the merchant attempts to outsmart her. He claims that his business is "unpredictable" and insists that the messenger has arrived on the "wrong day." He cleverly lists every day of the week—Sunday through Saturday—as a "wrong day," effectively ensuring that, by his own logic, he could never be expected to provide more than a single bag of rice. He prides himself on being a "clever guy," believing he has successfully evaded his civic duty.

The Messenger’s Retaliation

The royal messenger, however, proves to be a "very clever gal." Recognizing the merchant's deceit, she plays along with his game. She returns the following month with a "colossal paper bag," constructed from sheets of paper glued together with a flour-and-water paste. She confronts the merchant, stating that since he offered to give her anything she wanted as long as it wasn't a "wrong day," she would now accept the rest of his donation to fill this massive container.

Faced with the prospect of his business being "sunk" by the gargantuan bag, the merchant is forced to negotiate. He ultimately agrees to a compromise: he will provide his "fair share" of three bags of rice monthly and deliver additional donations to the palace whenever he wishes.

A Transformation of Heart

The story concludes with the merchant undergoing a profound change. Bested by his own logic and the messenger's wit, he ceases his "tight-fisted" ways and becomes "more open-hearted." The episode concludes by encouraging listeners to perform their own acts of kindness, whether it is making a "get-well card" for a friend or donating old clothing, reminding us all that "giving can be its own gift."
