📋 Summary

The Grim Fairy Tale: Orpy and the Wizard King

In this episode of the podcast Grim, Grimmer, Grimmest, host Adam Gidwitz narrates a dark, traditional fairy tale to a group of children. The story, entitled "The Wizard King," serves as a cautionary tale about greed, selfishness, and the power of kindness, set against the backdrop of a high-stakes, lethal game of hide-and-seek.

The Selfish Wizard King and His Lethal Game

The antagonist of the story is a "selfish evil jerk," a Wizard King who possesses immense magical power but uses it exclusively for himself. Bored with his unchallenged life, he institutes a game of hide-and-seek. The rules are simple but brutal: if a challenger can hide from the King, they win the throne and the crown. However, if the King finds them, he murders them in the "most horrible way imaginable."

The children in the audience contribute to the gruesome nature of the King's punishments, describing a fate involving a "bottomless pit," "liquid iron" that melts organs, and eyeballs being eaten by "millions of mice." The King’s palace features a tower with twelve magical windows, each increasing in power, allowing him to see through walls, around corners, and eventually, through the very "particles that make up all of nature."

Orpy: The Selfless Orphan

Contrasting the Wizard King is Orpy, a young, starving orphan. Despite his own hunger, Orpy is defined by his selflessness. When he finds a stale loaf of bread in the gutter, he repeatedly shares it with a raven, a fish, and a fox, all of whom are also starving. This act of kindness proves to be the turning point of the story, as these creatures eventually become his allies.

Driven by desperation and the certainty of starvation, Orpy decides to challenge the Wizard King. He witness two others fail—a thief and a prince—who are both discovered by the King’s magical windows and meet the prescribed, gruesome end.

The Power of Kindness and Camouflage

When it is Orpy’s turn to hide, he receives help from the animals he fed earlier:

  1. The Raven: The raven hides Orpy inside one of her eggs. The King searches through his first few windows but fails to find him until he reaches the fourth window, which is powerful enough to see into the egg.
  2. The Fish: After being dragged back to the palace, Orpy escapes again. The fish hides him inside its belly at the bottom of a pond. The King eventually finds him using his eighth window.
  3. The Fox: In a final, desperate attempt, the fox transforms Orpy into a hamster. The fox disguises herself as a human woman and takes the "amazing hamster" to the market to perform tricks.

The Downfall of the Wizard King

The King, distracted by the spectacle of the talented hamster, forgets to use his final, most powerful window until it is too late. Because Orpy is perched right on the King’s shoulder, the King cannot "see" him through the magic of the twelfth window. Terrified that he might lose his kingdom, the King panics when he hears Orpy’s voice near his ear. He stumbles, falls through the very window he was looking out of, and dies.

With the King's death, the magical windows shatter, and Orpy is transformed back into a boy. He ascends to the throne, ruling "wisely and kindly." True to his character, he shares his wealth with the needy, and his animal friends—the raven, the fish, and the fox—become his trusted counselors. The story concludes as a classic triumph of selflessness over greed, proving that even in a "grim" fairy tale, kindness can change one's fate.
