📋 Summary

A Finnish Tale of Love, Witches, and Flatulence

In this episode of Super Great Kids Stories, storyteller Sarah Lisa Wilkinson shares a charming and humorous Finnish folktale about a young man named Petko. The story explores themes of social class, true love, and the unexpected power of magical intervention.

The Humble Suitor and the Rejection

Petko, a young man from the countryside, is deeply in love with Pirko, a girl who lives in a “big house.” His affection is so intense that he describes his heart as a "bird, broke free from his chest" whenever he sees her. Hoping to win her hand in marriage, Petko dresses in his best "straw hat" and "colourful patches" on his trousers. Instead of traditional flowers, he brings a bouquet of mushrooms, knowing Pirko’s love for foraging—a hobby where she makes "little grunting noises like a lovely pig" when she finds a good specimen.

However, upon arriving, he is met by Pirko’s father, who treats Petko with disdain. The father views his daughter as a "precious gem" and a "china cup," deeming Petko a "common old garden ragamuffin." He slams the door in Petko's face, leaving the young man heartbroken and dejected.

The Witch’s Windy Gift

While fleeing back into the forest, an emotionally distraught Petko accidentally discovers a witch "sunk in a bog." Despite his initial reluctance, he pulls the witch to safety. To show her gratitude, the witch grants him a magical stone. The gift, however, is unconventional: "It makes you fart." The witch explains that anyone who blows on the stone will begin to "fart uncontrollably," and only the owner can stop the effect.

The Revenge and Resolution

Seeing an opportunity to humble the arrogant father, Petko sneaks into the house and places the stone beneath the stove. When the father blows on the stove to prepare for his "coffee and cake soiree," the magic is triggered. The result is a series of explosive and comical incidents that disrupt the party, causing the "fine and eligible gentlemen" to flee in social embarrassment.

Despite the chaos, the situation leads to a moment of vulnerability. Pirko laughs at the absurdity of the situation, and her father, overwhelmed by the "explosive" spectacle, eventually breaks down. Seizing the moment, Petko returns to the door, professing his love once more. The father, desperate to end the magical turmoil, agrees to the marriage. Petko ultimately removes the stone, bringing peace to the household. The couple marries and builds their dream life: "a red house by a potato field," which the narrator notes is "the best thing ever" in Finland.

Reflection on Trickster Tales

The host, Kim, concludes by reflecting on whether this qualifies as a "trickster tale." While it features a trick, she distinguishes it from classic trickster stories involving characters like Anansi or Br'er Rabbit, who exist to cause mischief. Instead, this story highlights the use of a "trick" to achieve a romantic and life-changing goal, proving that even a "windy" magical gift can lead to a "happily ever after."
