📋 Summary

The Unwelcome Guest: Challenging Our Prejudgments

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents a timeless folk tale originating from the Middle East, centered on the legendary wise man, Nasruddin. The narrative of "The Unwelcome Guest" serves as a poignant reminder that judging a person by their appearance—or "judging a book by its cover"—is a superficial habit that often blinds us to the true value of those around us.

The Disparity of Treatment

The story begins with a grand banquet hosted by the governor, an event intended for the entire town. Nasruddin, a hard-working man who supplies the wine for the feast, arrives at the celebration directly from his vineyard. Because he has been working in the dirt and sun, his clothes are "smudged with mud and splotches of grape juice," and he is covered in sweat. Upon his arrival, the reaction of the guests and the staff is immediate and exclusionary. The doormen "scrunched up their faces" at the smell of "squished grapes" and sweat, and once inside, Nasruddin finds himself ignored by neighbors and avoided by butlers. Even the governor, who is profiting from Nasruddin’s own wine, looks at him with a "frown" and turns away.

The Power of a Facade

Recognizing that he is being treated as an "unwelcome guest" solely due to his disheveled attire, Nasruddin decides to conduct an experiment. He returns home, scrubs himself clean, and dons his "long red silk coat," which is intricately embroidered with clusters of purple grapes. When he returns to the banquet hall in this fine attire, the transformation in the guests' behavior is stark. The doormen offer him a warm "Good evening," the butler rushes to escort him to the governor’s table, and the governor himself leaps up to offer him a seat of honor, praising him as "my good man."

The Lesson of the Coat

Nasruddin, however, has no intention of simply accepting this hypocritical hospitality. As the food is served, he begins to stuff "roasted bell peppers," "lentil soup," and "lamb kebabs" directly into the pockets of his silk coat. When the confused governor asks why he is wasting such "tantalizing food," Nasruddin delivers his masterstroke. He explains, "I’m feeding my coat, of course."

He then confronts the room, pointing out that when he arrived in his work clothes, he was treated like "nothing." By dressing in his fine coat, he was suddenly welcomed with open arms. Nasruddin poignantly concludes, "I realized it wasn't me that you wanted at your party. It was my coat."

Conclusion: Looking Beneath the Surface

The story concludes with the guests and the governor filled with "shame" as they realize the error of their ways. Nasruddin’s actions serve as "scrumptious food for thought," challenging both the characters in the story and the listeners at home to consider how often we dismiss people based on their outward appearance. As the episode suggests, true worth is never found in the "cover" of a person, but rather in the substance that lies within.
