📋 Summary

The Unselfish Shellfish: A Lesson in Virtue and Consequences

The Essence of Real Riches

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear introduces the Indonesian folktale "The Unselfish Shellfish" by reflecting on Oscar Wilde’s wisdom: "Ordinary riches can be stolen. Real riches cannot." While material wealth—represented by "jewels, cars, and fancy clothes"—is transient, true wealth consists of internal virtues like "kindness, honesty, and compassion." This moral foundation sets the stage for a story where the characters' integrity directly dictates their fortunes.

The Farmer’s Sacrifice

The story follows a poor farmer and his daughter, who are "scratching and scraping to get by." Facing starvation, the farmer decides to harvest oysters at the sea to survive. The Queen of the South Sea, described as "temperamental," rules these waters, and the farmer knows he must offer a gift to ensure his safety. Despite having almost nothing, the daughter gives the farmer their "last cup of rice" and her "favorite scarf" as an offering, demonstrating profound selflessness. The farmer, though hungry, respects this gift, knowing it is "intended for the queen."

The Trader’s Gluttony

In contrast, the story introduces a trader who embodies greed. Unlike the farmer, the trader treats his son’s offering—"fresh baked bread, roasted chicken, [and] ripe bananas"—as his own snack. He "carelessly dumped" the remains on the sand, treating the sacred offering with total disregard. His pursuit of "new ways to trade goods and rake it in" blinds him to the spiritual significance of the gesture, leading him to "stuff his face" while the farmer remains hungry but faithful.

Divine Retribution and Reward

The divergence in the characters' fates highlights the consequences of their actions. The farmer, having offered his humble gift with sincerity, discovers a "heaping pile of oysters." The Queen acknowledges his "true sacrifice," rewarding him with a bounty that contains "a bright, glistening pearl" in every shell. This newfound wealth allows the farmer and his daughter to "share their good fortune with others," proving they are "rich in generosity."

Conversely, the trader faces the wrath of the Queen. After falling asleep in a cave, he is awakened by a "colossal whitecap." The Queen confronts him, calling him a "greedy glutton" for devouring the offering. When the trader returns home, he finds his house flooded—a direct result of his son’s prayer for a fortune "as great as the offering" the father supposedly gave. Because the father gave nothing but "crumbs and bones," he receives only misfortune in return.

Conclusion: A Call to Stewardship

The narrative concludes by connecting the story’s moral to real-world environmental stewardship. Just as the farmer respected the sea and was rewarded, the listener is encouraged to practice kindness toward nature by recycling, conserving water, and reducing waste. The story serves as a timeless reminder that when we approach the world with "respect" and "generosity," we cultivate the kind of "real riches" that can never be stolen.
