📋 Summary

The Tragic Tale of the Ghassemi Family

The story of Tahereh Ghassemi is a harrowing narrative of an American dream turned into a nightmare. Tahereh, an Iranian immigrant who worked her way up to a management position at Walmart, was a devoted mother to her son, Hamed. However, beneath the surface of their quiet life in Baton Rouge lay a web of "money, power, and greed" orchestrated by her ex-husband, Hamid Ghassemi.

The Disappearance and Discovery

On April 11, 2015, Hamed returned home to find a pot of rice burning on the stove and his mother missing. Initially, he assumed she had simply stepped out, despite their "tense relationship" characterized by arguments and heated text messages like "leave me the F alone." As days passed and his mother failed to appear at work, the situation escalated. Police soon discovered her blue Jaguar had been "torched" in a remote, industrial part of town.

Investigators became suspicious of Hamed due to his shifting timeline and the discovery of a "tense relationship" between mother and son. However, the true culprit was hiding in plain sight. Security footage from a neighboring business captured a Chevy Tahoe—a vehicle later identified as belonging to the dealership owned by Tahereh’s ex-husband, Hamid—lurking near the residence on the night of the disappearance.

A Diabolical Murder Plot

The investigation took a dark turn when police traced a suspicious 17-second phone call to a young man named Tyler Ashbaugh. Google coordinates from Ashbaugh’s phone led authorities to a "remote area" on the banks of the Mississippi River. There, investigators found a shallow grave containing Tahereh’s body, wrapped in a comforter that had gone missing from Hamed’s bedroom. She had been killed by two gunshot wounds to the head.

Under interrogation, Ashbaugh confessed to a "murder for hire" plot. He and an accomplice, Skylar Williams, had been recruited by Daniel Richter, a mechanic at Hamid Ghassemi’s dealership. The plan was brutal: they injected Tahereh with insulin, wrapped her in the comforter, and drove her to the site where she was executed. The motive was purely financial; following their divorce, Hamid had been ordered to pay Tahereh a significant settlement, which he desperately wanted to avoid.

Betrayal and Aftermath

The plot went even deeper. During the trial, it was revealed that Hamid had also targeted his own son, Hamed, for murder to reclaim the settlement money. Hamed had only survived because he happened to be out for dinner that night. Following the murder, Hamid attempted to silence his son further by using his connections in Iran to have Hamed arrested on false charges of "conspiracy against the Iranian government," leading to months of solitary confinement for the young man.

Ultimately, justice was served. Hamid Ghassemi was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, where he died in 2024. The hitmen, Richter and Williams, were sentenced to 30 years. Today, Hamed has reclaimed his life, running his own business and honoring his mother’s memory. As he reflects on his survival, he notes that his mother’s dream—that he would find happiness and a partner who understands his culture—has finally come to fruition, serving as a testament to his resilience in the face of his father’s "evil act."
