📋 Summary

The Tug of War: A Lesson in True Strength

In the latest episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents a timeless folktale, "The Tug of War." Rooted in oral traditions from East Africa, Brazil, and across the United States, this story serves as a poignant reminder that intellectual prowess often outweighs physical dominance.

The Arrogance of the Giants

The story introduces us to two "boastful beasts": the Elephant, who claims to be the "king of the forest," and the Hippopotamus, the self-proclaimed "queen of the river." Both animals rely on their massive physical presence to intimidate others. The Elephant prides himself on his "massive gray feet" and "trumpeting roar," while the Hippo boasts of her "long, pointy teeth" and the ability to cause a disturbance like a "hurricane" when entering the water. Their constant bullying of the smaller creatures creates an environment of fear and exclusion.

Turtle’s Ingenious Strategy

Turtle, tired of the pair's arrogance, decides to challenge their perceptions of power. She gathers "long, strong tree vines" to create a sturdy rope, planning a deceptive tug-of-war. By approaching each giant individually, she challenges their superiority, claiming, "I bet if we had a tug-of-war, I would win." Both animals, blinded by their own pride, scoff at the idea, dismissing Turtle as a "Pipsqueak" and a "runt."

Turtle’s plan is simple yet brilliant: she gives one end of the rope to the Elephant and the other to the Hippo, then hides in a "thicket" halfway between the two. When she blows her whistle, both giants begin to pull, believing they are battling the small turtle.

The Exhaustion of Pride

As the contest ensues, the "colossal beasts" pull with all their might. The Elephant inadvertently turns the forest into a "shambles of branches," while the Hippo churns the river into a "mess of brown" mud. Despite their exhaustion, neither will admit defeat, driven by their pride. Turtle, watching from the bushes, reinforces the theme of the story, noting to herself, "Maybe I have strengths you cannot see."

The Realization of Equality

When the giants finally collapse in exhaustion and meet face-to-face, they realize the truth: they have been pulling against each other the entire time. Upon discovering the small, sleeping Turtle, they are humbled. The realization that they were outsmarted by a creature they deemed insignificant changes their perspective forever. They stop calling themselves royalty and begin to treat the other animals as their "equals."

Conclusion: Wisdom as Power

The story concludes with a powerful moral: "No matter how teeny tiny we are... we can be the biggest and the strongest and the wisest, after all." Circle Round invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences of strength and wisdom, encouraging them to see beyond physical size and recognize that the most significant power often lies in the mind.
