📋 Summary

The Unexpected Fortune

The story begins with a soldier returning from war, encountering a mysterious "old witch" who offers him immense wealth. The witch guides him to a "big tree" that is "hollow inside," promising that he can "fetch money" if he follows her instructions. The soldier discovers a magical hall guarded by three extraordinary dogs with eyes ranging from the size of "saucers" to those as large as "the round tower." By using the witch's "blue checked apron," he safely retrieves copper, silver, and gold coins, ultimately prioritizing the gold, which he notes would allow him to "buy the whole of Copenhagen."

The Power of the Tinderbox

While the soldier initially forgets the witch's only request—an "old tinderbox"—he eventually retrieves it. Their alliance quickly sours when the witch refuses to explain her "wicked plans" for the object. The soldier, asserting his authority, forces her away and keeps the prize. Upon falling into poverty after spending his wealth, the soldier discovers the tinderbox’s true nature. Striking it brings the magical dogs to his service, allowing him to command them to "bring me some money." This revelation marks a shift in his status, as he returns to his "fine rooms" and regains his standing as a "real gentleman."

Forbidden Love and Royal Intrigue

The soldier's ambition grows, and he desires to see the king’s daughter, who is kept in a "great copper castle" due to a prophecy that she will "marry a common soldier." Using the tinderbox, he summons the dog to bring the princess to him while she sleeps. Their interactions are brief but profound, leading to a "single peck on the forehead." The royal family, suspicious of the princess's "very strange dream," attempts to track her movements using a "neat little bag" of "buckwheat flour." When the flour trail reveals the soldier’s location, he is promptly arrested and sentenced to be "tarred and feathered."

A Final Command and Royal Ascension

Facing execution, the soldier manages to retrieve his tinderbox through a clever deal with a "shoemaker's boy." As he stands on the scaffold, he requests to smoke his pipe, using the moment to strike the tinderbox one last time. The three dogs reappear, protecting the soldier by attacking the judges and the king and queen. The narrative concludes with the people cheering for the "little soldier," who becomes the new king, marries the princess, and holds a "wedding feast" that lasts for eight days, with the dogs taking their place of honor at the table.
