📋 Summary

The Starfruit Tree: A Lesson in Character

"The Starfruit Tree," a folktale originating from Vietnam, serves as a poignant exploration of the contrasting virtues of greed and generosity. Through the lives of two sisters, Sang and Kim, the narrative illustrates how one's attitude toward wealth and others dictates their ultimate fate.

The Inheritance and the Divergence

Following the death of their mother, the sisters were instructed to divide their inheritance "50-50." While the younger sister, Kim, was characterized as "kind and generous" and "content with her lot in life," the older sister, Sang, was "greedy and selfish," driven by a need to "keep it all to herself." Consequently, Sang usurped the majority of the estate, leaving Kim with only a "run-down shack" and a "lonely little starfruit tree."

The Raven’s Reward

Despite her meager circumstances, Kim demonstrated profound patience and care for her property. When a raven arrived to eat the fruits of her labor, rather than shooing the bird away, Kim offered the fruit, stating, "You must be hungry. So go ahead, have a nibble." This act of kindness proved pivotal. The raven, recognizing her "generosity," promised a reward. Kim was instructed to prepare a sack no longer than "three feet" to be filled with gold from a distant island. By adhering strictly to these instructions, Kim secured enough wealth to rebuild her life, eventually using her prosperity to "donate her extra food to the less fortunate people in town."

The Consequences of Greed

Driven by jealousy, Sang coerced Kim into trading properties. Upon encountering the raven, Sang attempted to exploit the system. Ignoring the implicit constraints of the reward, she prepared a sack that was "more like six feet" long, intending to hoard as much gold as possible. Her insatiable desire led to a disastrous outcome: the raven, burdened by the excessive weight of the oversized sack, was forced to drop the gold into the sea to survive. When Sang continued to demand the bird "fly higher," the raven eventually released the load, causing the treasure to sink and leaving Sang stranded on the island, "all alone, surrounded by sparkling, glittering gold."

Conclusion: The Sweetness of Sharing

The story concludes with a clear moral contrast. While Sang remains isolated with her unreachable wealth, Kim continues to thrive, having "planted an entire orchard of starfruit trees" to share with others. Her life reflects a heart that is "as sweet and as golden" as the fruit she cultivates, reminding listeners that true prosperity is found not in hoarding, but in the willingness to share with those around us.
