📋 Summary

The Arrogant Squire and His Hubris

The story centers on a wealthy and pompous landowner in Norway, known as a "squire," who believes himself to be the most important man for miles around. His vanity reaches a peak when he decides that a man of his stature requires a wife. He sets his sights on the daughter of a neighbor, a young woman who works for him. The squire, blinded by his own "ruddy red complexion and his big, bristly moustache," assumes that his proposal will be met with "surprise, excitement, joy, and awe." Instead, the young woman is horrified, viewing him as nothing more than a "bloated, puffed-up old windbag," and she rejects his advances with laughter.

The Father's Desperation and the Squire's Scheme

Unable to comprehend the rejection, the squire manipulates the girl’s father, who is a "poor man" and thus "desperate." The squire offers to forgive the father’s debts if he can deliver his daughter to be married. The father, knowing his daughter would "rather marry their pig" than the squire, attempts to manage the situation by stalling. He instructs the squire to prepare for a wedding and promises that his daughter will arrive, warning the squire to "keep a good grip on her." The squire, interpreting this literally, prepares his servants to forcibly seize the bride upon her arrival.

The Tables Turned: A Humiliating Lesson

When the squire sends a servant to collect his "promised" bride, the clever young woman redirects the instruction. She leads the servant to the stables and hands him the reins of her white mare, telling him, "That's what the squire's after." The servant, fearing the squire’s temper, blindly follows orders. He manages to get the horse up three flights of stairs into the squire’s mother’s old bedroom, where serving girls are tasked to dress the animal in a "frilly lacy sticky, outy monstrosity"—the mother’s old wedding dress.

The Wedding Day Disaster

The climax of the tale occurs in the great hall. As the squire stands with his back to the door, rehearsing his vows, the white mare is led down the aisle. When the guests witness a horse draped in a bridal gown, the room erupts into uncontrollable laughter. Even the parson begins "shaking like a jelly." When the squire finally turns to face his bride, he finds himself "face to long face with his horse." The public humiliation serves as an effective deterrent; the squire is never seen "bothering another woman again," proving that the clever young woman’s trick successfully dismantled his arrogance through the power of ridicule.
