📋 Summary

The Soldier and the Devil: A Tale of Generosity and Fate

Introduction

"The Soldier and the Devil" is a classic Czech folktale that explores themes of kindness, divine intervention, and the inevitable cycle of life and death. The story follows a war-weary soldier returning home, whose selfless acts lead to extraordinary rewards that eventually pit him against the most powerful force in existence: Death itself.

The Soldier’s Generosity

As the soldier travels home, he encounters three beggars. Despite having only three pennies to his name, he displays immense empathy. He gives one penny to an old woman whose fields were "trampled into mud by soldiers," another to a man suffering from a fever caused by the war, and his final penny to a young veteran who lost his foot to a "cannonball." The soldier’s philosophy is simple: "I saw worse fevers in the war" and "I know that with just a tiny twist of bad luck, I could be the one missing a foot." This profound kindness does not go unnoticed.

Divine Rewards

An angel, moved by the soldier’s "brave and fair" behavior, appears in a "flash of white light" to reward him. She grants him two magical items: a backpack that can capture anything upon command and a coin purse that "will never run dry." These gifts serve as both a blessing and a test of the soldier’s character as he continues his journey.

Battles with the Supernatural

Equipped with his magic, the soldier faces several challenges. First, he rids a local farmhouse of an "imp" that smells of "brimstone" by commanding it to "get in my bag." He later traps this creature in a blacksmith’s forge. Next, he outwits a "card shark" at an inn, realizing she had "marked the cards" to cheat him. By breaking her code, he wins the match and shows mercy by allowing her to keep her remaining coins, provided she promises to stop cheating others.

The Final Confrontation: Death

Upon finally reaching his home, the soldier encounters the ultimate antagonist: the Grim Reaper, who has come to claim his sick mother. Using his "extra sight" granted by the angel’s gifts, the soldier confronts Death. When Death threatens him, the soldier commands, "Death, get in my bag." By trapping Death, the soldier successfully delays his mother’s passing, demonstrating his fierce loyalty to his family.

Conclusion and Moral

The story concludes when the angel returns to reclaim the bag, explaining that "the world needs death as part of the natural cycle." The soldier agrees, acknowledging that "we can't have life without death," provided his family is spared for a long time. The angel allows him to keep the magical coin purse, ensuring a prosperous life for him and his parents. Ultimately, the tale celebrates the idea that while one cannot escape the natural order, kindness and integrity are the virtues that define a person’s journey home.
