The Tragic Miscarriage of Justice: The Case of Timothy Evans and John Christie

In 1953, a routine home renovation in London led to a discovery that would forever alter the legal landscape of the United Kingdom. When Beresford Brown pulled back wallpaper in his kitchen pantry to reveal a secret door, he uncovered a horrific crime scene that exposed one of the most significant judicial failures in British history: the wrongful execution of Timothy Evans.

The Vulnerable Life of Timothy Evans

Timothy Evans, born into poverty in 1924, faced a life defined by hardship. Suffering from tuberculosis of the skin, which rendered him physically disabled, and possessing an IQ between 60 and 70, Evans struggled with illiteracy and constant social rejection. His coping mechanism—a penchant for telling "tall tales"—eventually became a compulsive habit, leaving him with little credibility when he truly needed it. By 1947, he had married Beryl Thorley, and the couple faced severe financial strain, living in squalid conditions that eroded their marriage.

The Unlikely Mentor: John Christie

During this period of despair, Evans befriended his downstairs neighbor, John Christie. To the vulnerable Evans, Christie—a war veteran and former police constable—appeared to be a father figure and a mentor. However, unbeknownst to Evans, Christie was a serial killer. When Beryl became pregnant again, the couple, terrified by their poverty, sought Christie’s help. Christie, under the guise of being "medically trained," offered to perform an illegal abortion. In reality, Christie used a makeshift gas apparatus to render Beryl unconscious before assaulting and strangling her. He subsequently murdered their 13-month-old daughter, Geraldine, and hid their bodies in the backyard shed.

The Botched Investigation and Judicial Failure

When Evans discovered his family was dead, he was manipulated by Christie into fleeing to Wales. Overcome by guilt and confusion, Evans turned himself in, initially lying to police to protect his friend. Because Evans had a history of lying and a known history of domestic conflict, the police were blinded by confirmation bias. They ignored evidence of Christie’s crimes—including human remains found in the yard by a dog—and focused solely on extracting a confession from Evans. Despite Evans recanting and attempting to point the finger at Christie, the jury viewed the articulate, "impeccable" war hero Christie as credible, while the intellectually disabled Evans was dismissed. Evans was convicted and executed in 1950.

The Aftermath and Legal Reform

Three years later, the truth emerged when the new tenant, Beresford Brown, found three more bodies hidden behind the secret door in the pantry. Christie confessed to the murders, but the damage was irreversible. The profound injustice of the state executing an innocent man served as a catalyst for the UK to suspend the death penalty in 1965, eventually abolishing it entirely in 1969. Timothy Evans was granted a posthumous pardon in 1966, officially clearing his name, though it came far too late to rectify the failure of the justice system that had condemned him.
