📋 Summary

The Seal of Fate: A Tale of Deception and Justice

The Betrayal of Trust

In this episode of Circle Around, titled "The Seal of Fate," we are introduced to a hardworking candle maker who decides to embark on a journey to his brother’s wedding. Concerned for the safety of his life savings—one thousand silver coins—he seeks the assistance of the local judge. Trusting her professional status, he seals his leather sack with wax, stamping it with a candle emblem to ensure no one tampers with his property. The judge, acting with deceitful charm, promises to be as "watchful as a spider in its web," yet her true intentions are far more sinister.

The Discovery of Deception

Upon his return, the candle maker is initially relieved to find his sack seemingly untouched. However, upon breaking the wax seal, he is devastated to discover that his silver coins have been replaced by a "dull mound of copper coins." When he confronts the judge, she coldly denies the theft, claiming that she returned the bag exactly as she received it. The candle maker, feeling like a "poor helpless fly who’s been caught in that web," finds himself powerless against the corrupt magistrate.

The King’s Intervention

In a stroke of fate, the candle maker vents his frustration to a stranger who is actually the king in disguise. Intrigued and moved by the injustice, the king vows to help. He takes the sack and devises a clever plan. After cutting a slit in his own silk throne cushion, he orchestrates a situation where he requires a master tailor to repair it. When the tailor arrives, the king asks if he can mend leather as well. The tailor reveals a crucial piece of evidence: he was previously hired by the judge to repair a leather sack—the very same one—and was instructed to fill it with copper coins after the original silver contents were removed.

Justice Served

Armed with this confession, the king confronts the judge. Caught in her own lies, the judge is forced to admit her guilt. The king demands that she return the stolen silver and provide a sincere apology to the candle maker. The story concludes with a powerful lesson: those who act with dishonesty often seal their own fate, just as the judge found herself trapped by the very web of deceit she spun for others. The episode serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and the value of those we can truly trust.
