📋 Summary

The Rise of Datumo: Challenging Scale AI and the Future of AI Evaluation

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, a South Korean startup named Datumo has emerged as a significant player, recently securing $15.5 million in funding. With a total of $28 million raised to date, Datumo is positioning itself as a direct competitor to industry giant Scale AI, capitalizing on the growing enterprise demand for safe, reliable, and high-quality AI models.

The Genesis and Business Model of Datumo

Founded by CEO David Kim, a former AI researcher at Korea’s Agency for Defense Development, Datumo was born out of frustration regarding the "time-consuming" nature of data labeling for AI training. Kim’s solution was unique: a reward-based app that crowdsources data labeling, allowing individuals to monetize their spare time. This innovative approach allowed the company to gain immediate traction, securing tens of thousands of dollars in pre-contract sales even before the platform was fully developed. Within its first year, Datumo surpassed $1 million in revenue, attracting major Korean conglomerates including Samsung, LG Electronics, Hyundai, Naver, and SK Telecom.

Evolution from Data Labeling to AI Benchmarking

While Datumo began as a data labeling company similar to Scale AI, market demands have pushed them to evolve. As the LLM ecosystem matured, clients began requesting more than just raw data annotation. Co-founder Michael Huang noted that when clients asked for help scoring AI model outputs, the company realized they were "already doing model evaluation without even knowing it."

Today, Datumo offers a full-stack evaluation platform, including a no-code tool designed specifically for non-developers in policy, trust, safety, and compliance teams. This shift is timely; as noted in a McKinsey report, many organizations view AI decision-making as a "significant risk," with only 17% of companies currently feeling equipped to address these safety concerns actively.

Competitive Positioning and Strategic Differentiation

Datumo’s growth arrives amidst industry turbulence. The recent $14.3 billion investment involving Meta and Scale AI caused friction, with companies like OpenAI reportedly distancing themselves from Scale AI due to competitive concerns. Datumo distinguishes itself not only through its evaluation tools but also by providing licensed data sets. One notable offering involves data crawled from published books, which the company describes as a "rich, structured human reasoning tool." This helps models learn how to "reason through problems" more effectively, a critical capability for advanced AI.

A Unique Path to Funding

Datumo’s recent funding round, led by Salesforce Ventures alongside KB Investments, ACVC Partners, and SBI Investments, highlights the power of networking. The connection was sparked after Datumo hosted a fireside chat with Andrew Ng and shared the event on LinkedIn, catching the attention of Salesforce Ventures. This underscores a modern approach to startup growth: leveraging thought leadership and digital visibility to attract top-tier global investors.

Future Outlook

With 150 employees and a new presence in Silicon Valley, Datumo is now focused on accelerating R&D for automated evaluation tools and scaling its global go-to-market strategy. By targeting expansion into Japan and the U.S., Datumo is clearly signaling its intent to move beyond its Korean roots and compete on the global stage. As the market for AI safety and benchmarking continues to explode, Datumo’s journey from a crowdsourced labeling app to an enterprise AI evaluation provider serves as a compelling case study in industry adaptability.

📖 Transcript

Today on the podcast, I want to talk about a really interesting startup called Datumo that just raised 15.5%. million to take on scale AI.
The reason why I think they're interesting is basically they're What they're doing, I think the industry and all the drama behind Scale.ai's recent meta acqui-hire acquisition investment thing makes it a really interesting company, but also how they were able to get their investment actually got it from Salesforce ventures in I think, maybe like a very unique way.
So I want to dive into everything this company is doing and where the market is going in this area, because I think it is an absolutely massive market, as we've seen with scale and meta doing their you know, $14 billion deal.
There's a lot going on here. So let's dive into it.
Before we do, I wanted to mention, if you want to try any of the AI models I talk about on the show, I'd love for you to check out my startup, which is called AI Box.
On AI Box, I have the top 40 AI models. You're able to try all of them in one playground and eventually essentially try them side by side to see which model is the best.
