📋 Summary

The Red Velvet Purse: A Tale of Greed and Justice

The Deceptive Merchant

The story follows a "prosperous merchant" who travels from town to town, gaining wealth through "flim-flam" and "outrageous claims" about his wares. He lures customers with fabricated stories, such as mangoes picked by an empress or perfume made by mermaids. Each evening, this "greedy, dishonest fellow" counts the coins inside his "big red velvet purse," reveling in the money he has "swindled from the silly saps."

The Loss and the Honest Find

During a journey to a distant town, the merchant realizes his "red velvet purse" is missing. After retracing his steps in a panic, he encounters a humble farmer who has found the purse near her wheat field. The farmer, acting with integrity, immediately attempts to return the item, noting that she "counted all five hundred of those gold coins" and felt compelled to return them to the "rightful owner."

The Trap of Greed

Upon receiving the purse, the "money-grubbing merchant" hatches a devious plan to increase his profits. He lies to the farmer, claiming his purse originally contained "1,000 gold coins" rather than the 500 he actually possessed. By accusing the farmer of theft, he attempts to extort more money from her. When the farmer denies the accusation, the merchant escalates the situation, leading to a confrontation involving a police officer and a subsequent appearance in court.

The Judge’s Verdict

The judge, who recognizes the merchant as an "unscrupulous salesman" known for his "shady tricks," decides to turn the table on the swindler. During the trial, the merchant insists that his lost purse held 1,000 coins. The judge, having counted the coins in the returned purse to be exactly 500, delivers a masterful ruling: she declares that since the merchant lost a purse of 1,000 coins, the purse currently on the table "cannot possibly be yours."

Conclusion

The merchant is dismissed, left to "seek it elsewhere," while the judge awards the purse to the farmer as a "reward for your honesty," provided no other owner comes forward. Ultimately, the "trickster became the tricked," reinforcing the moral that greed and dishonesty often lead to one's own undoing, while integrity is eventually rewarded.
