📋 Summary

The Tragic Murder of Laura Salmon

In May 1984, the life of 18-year-old Laura Salmon, a college freshman at Middle Tennessee State University, was brutally cut short. Her disappearance and subsequent discovery in a hayfield in Murfreesboro marked the beginning of a haunting mystery that would remain unsolved for over a decade and a half.

The Discovery and Initial Investigation

On May 31, 1984, a local farmer discovered a body in a hayfield near a rock quarry—a location often used by local students for partying. Detective Bob Asbury arrived to find the victim, Laura Salmon, nude except for her bra, with her legs spread and her face covered by a black jacket. Two pairs of blue jeans—one men's and one women's—were laid on top of her.

Detective Asbury noted "deep wounds on the side of her head," indicative of "blunt force trauma," and found rocks "caked with what looked like dried blood" nearby. The scene appeared to be a sexual assault, but the lack of forensic technology in 1984 meant investigators were limited to blood typing and circumstantial evidence. Laura’s car was found at her workplace, with the driver's seat "pushed all the way back," suggesting the perpetrator was a tall man.

The Suspects and a Cold Trail

Detective Asbury focused on two primary individuals:

  1. Dan Goodwin: A casual date of Laura’s who was completely cooperative but had no connection to the crime scene.
  2. Kyle Gilley: Laura’s 17-year-old high school ex-boyfriend. Gilley was physically imposing, standing at "at least 6'2"," fitting the profile of the person who drove Laura's car. However, Gilley provided an alibi, claiming he was grilling steaks with his stepfather, which was corroborated at the time.

As the investigation stalled, the case went cold. Asbury retired, and Laura’s mother was left with no answers for years, watching the suspects move on with their lives while she mourned her daughter.

A New Chapter: The Role of DNA

In February 2000, 16 years later, the case was reopened by Lieutenant Bill Sharp and Dan Goodwin—the same man who had taken Laura to the movies shortly before her death and had promised her mother he would find the killer.

Equipped with modern "DNA" testing, the team re-examined the evidence. The forensic results were definitive: the blood on the rocks and the jeans belonged to Laura, but the "men's jeans" contained DNA evidence that matched the killer. This confirmed that the scene had been staged to look like a sexual assault to mislead investigators.

The Truth Revealed

Through a re-examination of forgotten evidence, including an "overlooked witness statement" from 1984—which placed Kyle Gilley driving Laura’s car alone on the day of the murder—the detectives identified the killer.

It was revealed that Kyle Gilley, unable to cope with their breakup, had been stalking Laura. Driven by "jealousy and rage," he confronted her, murdered her with rocks, and staged the scene. He had even followed her to a club the night before the murder to watch her with another man.

Kyle Gilley was sentenced to life in prison. The case, which had haunted the community for 16 years, was finally closed, fulfilling Dan Goodwin’s long-standing promise to Laura’s mother.
