📋 Summary

The Price Master: A Tale of Greed and Justice

The Shift from Fairness to Greed

In this episode of Circle Round, we are introduced to a South Asian folktale centered on the concept of value and integrity. The story begins in a colossal palace where the Queen employs a "Price Maker," an official tasked with setting fair prices for the crown's transactions. The original Price Maker is defined by his honesty, often advising the Queen to pay more when buying and charge less when selling to ensure fairness. However, the Queen’s growing greed leads her to dismiss this honest official in favor of a successor who promises to maximize her profits.

The Rise of the 'Price Master'

The new official is a stark contrast to his predecessor. He abandons the title of "Price Maker," insisting on being called the "Price Master." His philosophy is simple: rather than seeking fairness, he seeks the "best price"—the one that makes the Queen happiest. He pridefully declares that he will "masterfully fill the queen's coffers," establishing a regime where the Queen buys at "ridiculously low prices" and sells at "ridiculously high ones."

The Conflict: The Horse Dealer’s Dilemma

The consequences of this corruption are realized when a horse dealer arrives at the palace with 100 magnificent stallions. When the Queen expresses interest in buying the entire team, the Price Master intervenes, asserting his authority: "I call the shots when it comes to the naming of the price." In a display of extreme audacity, he evaluates the horses—noting their "shiny coats" and "strong bodies"—but ultimately dictates that they are worth only "one cup of rice."

Despite the dealer’s protests that the horses are worth "an entire chest of gold," the Queen sides with her Price Master, praising him as a "genius." The dealer is forced to accept the meager payment of a "doggy bag" of rice under the threat of being "arrested and thrown into the dungeon."

A Quest for Retribution

Defeated and heartbroken, the dealer encounters the former Price Maker in the town square. Upon hearing the tale, the former official identifies his successor as a "real troublemaker." Showing the wit characteristic of traditional folktales, the former Price Maker devises a plan to ensure that the "price master will lose face, and the queen will face the facts." The story concludes on a cliffhanger, setting the stage for a clever subversion of the Price Master’s greed using disguises, including "elegant suits" and a "jar of soot."

Conclusion

The Price Master serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked greed and the importance of ethical leadership. By contrasting the honest "Price Maker" with the arrogant "Price Master," the narrative highlights how the pursuit of profit at the expense of fairness inevitably leads to moral corruption and social injustice.
