A new study in the Journal of Chemical Physics by chemist Luis González-McDowell offers a definitive answer: ice is inherently lubricated by a thin film of water, even at temperatures as low as negative 10 degrees Celsius.

Contrary to older theories suggesting that pressure from a skate blade is the sole creator of this liquid layer, González-McDowell’s computer simulations confirm that a water layer approximately one nanometer thick is always present on the ice surface. When a skater applies pressure, the friction generated causes further melting, thickening this layer and increasing slipperiness. Additionally, the study notes that environmental factors, such as humidity, play a critical role in the formation and consistency of this surface, which could have implications for the quality of ice rinks in future winter sports competitions.

The Psychology of Disgust and Parental Habituation

Finally, the podcast addresses the psychology of disgust, an emotion essential for human survival as it helps individuals avoid harmful substances. However, researchers from the University of Bristol and Whitman College explored a phenomenon known as "habituation"—the process by which repeated exposure reduces sensitivity to a stimulus.

In a study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, lead author Edwin Dahlmeier examined whether parents retain a higher tolerance for disgusting stimuli, such as dirty diapers or vomit, compared to non-parents. By tracking the eye movements of 99 parents and 50 non-parents as they viewed both neutral and repulsive images, the researchers discovered that parents exhibited little to no avoidance of disgusting imagery. Remarkably, this "superpower" of resistance to disgust persisted even among parents whose children were long grown. This research suggests that habituation is a durable psychological adaptation, with potential applications for professionals in fields such as nursing, surgery, and custodial work, where overcoming initial aversion is necessary for task performance.
