📋 Summary

The Stalking of Matt Higgins: An Unexplained Wilderness Horror

The Inspiration for the Journey

In 2008, 18-year-old Matt Higgins, inspired by the film Into the Wild and the story of Christopher McCandless, set out to hike the California section of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Seeking a break from reality before committing to a career or college, Matt planned a 1,700-mile solo trek. Despite his extensive experience in the Oregon wilderness—having navigated areas known for cougars, bears, and treacherous terrain—he was about to encounter a threat that defied all logic and survival training.

The First Encounter: The People in White

While hiking through the dense Lassen National Forest, Matt encountered a man and a woman sitting on a boulder. They were dressed entirely in white, appearing "dirty and disheveled," and stared at him with "no discernible expression." Despite Matt’s attempt to initiate a friendly greeting, they remained silent, creating an immediate sense of unease.

That night, after hiking 300 feet off the main trail to set up a secluded camp, Matt’s food supply was stolen. Upon inspecting the scene the next morning, he discovered "two sets of human boot prints" circling his tent. The realization that these individuals had navigated the pitch-black, dense forest to track him off-trail was the beginning of a psychological nightmare.

Escalation: Whispers in the Dark

Days later, after taking precautions like a "perimeter of sticks" to alert him of intruders, Matt was awoken in the middle of the night. He heard the unmistakable sound of a stick breaking, followed by "frantic whispers" emanating from all directions. The intruders circled his tent, yet when he finally checked the area at sunrise, they were nowhere to be found. The presence of fresh boot prints confirmed that this was not a nightmare, but a deliberate, coordinated act of stalking.

The Mount Shasta Pursuit

Matt attempted to escape by moving toward Mount Shasta, a region notorious for its "disturbing backstory" regarding unexplained disappearances. Despite his efforts to remain alert, he eventually spotted the two "white dots" following him from miles away. Realizing they were tracking him across hundreds of miles of wilderness, Matt abandoned his hike and fled toward the nearest town, Castella, California.

The Final Confrontation

In a desperate attempt to lose his pursuers, Matt ran for hours until exhaustion forced him to hide deep in the forest. He set up a makeshift camp, but the stalkers found him again. His tent was illuminated by a light, and after a frantic escape, he spent the night hiding under a fallen log while his pursuers searched for him. He eventually reached safety in Mount Shasta, but the mystery remains unsolved. Local authorities confirmed reports of stolen items in the area, but Matt was the only victim to report being systematically terrorized by the mysterious pair. To this day, the identity of the "people in white" and their ability to navigate the wilderness in total darkness remain a chilling, unexplained mystery.

📖 Transcript

In 2008, a teenager was hiking through a very dense forest in Northern California when he decided to stop and make camp for the night.
He walked several hundred feet off the main trail into the forest, where he found a small clearing and there he would set up his tent and he would climb inside and go to sleep.
A few hours later he would wake up because he thought he heard something outside of his tent.
But there were no windows on his tent and it was totally pitch black outside so we can't see anything.
And so he's just laying there listening, trying to discern what's going on outside.
And as he's laying there he hears it again, and it's the sound of footsteps slowly approaching his tent.
