📋 Summary

The Quest for the Peach of Life

In the folk tale The Peach of Life, a kingdom is thrown into despair when the princess falls gravely ill. Despite the efforts of numerous doctors, the princess remains "too weak and frail to get out of bed." Desperate to save her only child, the queen seeks the guidance of a mysterious wizard living in a cave. He informs her that the only cure is the "Peach of Life," a legendary fruit that is unfortunately lost. Driven by hope, the queen issues a proclamation promising a "rich reward" to anyone who can recover the magical peach.

The Failure of Selfishness

The proclamation reaches an orchard run by three siblings: Summer and her two younger brothers, Autumn and Winter. While Summer works hard "pruning, watering, and weeding the fruit trees," her brothers prefer to "loaf around." Motivated solely by the desire for wealth, the brothers attempt to claim the reward. However, when they encounter the wizard on their way to the palace, their arrogance and dishonesty lead to their downfall. Autumn, dismissive of the "grizzled codger," lies and claims he carries "moldy bread." Winter, similarly rude, claims his sack is full of "cockroaches." Because they spoke these words with malice, the wizard’s magic manifests their lies, and when they arrive at the palace, the queen finds only rotting food and insects, leading her to throw both brothers into the "dungeon."

The Virtue of Empathy

Unlike her brothers, Summer approaches the task with sincerity and compassion. When she meets the wizard, she does not scowl or "blow him off." Instead, she speaks honestly about carrying peaches and shows kindness, even offering to share her harvest with the hungry old man. Recognizing her pure heart, the wizard blesses her mission. Upon arriving at the palace, Summer finds the queen in deep sorrow, having faced the heartbreak of "watching your one and only child waste away." Summer’s genuine empathy and her willingness to help the queen, rather than just seeking a reward, result in the transformation of her meager, "small and hard" peaches into a single, "magnificent" and "plump" fruit.

Redemption and Teamwork

After the princess takes a bite of the peach and is miraculously restored to health, Summer displays true character by asking not for jewels or luxury, but for resources to help her family survive. Furthermore, upon learning of her brothers' imprisonment, she advocates for their release, noting that "my brothers didn't mean to deceive" the queen. The queen, realizing the importance of family, releases them. The story concludes with a profound transformation: the siblings return home to work as a team. Autumn and Winter, having learned their lesson, transition from "loafing and lazing around" to actively helping their sister. The narrative serves as an enduring lesson on the power of kindness, honesty, and the necessity of working together to overcome life's challenges.
