📋 Summary

The Palace of Cats: A Tale of Kindness and Consequences

In this episode of Circle Round, host Rebecca Shear presents "The Palace of Cats," a story inspired by Palestinian folklore that explores the themes of generosity, greed, and the unexpected rewards of a kind heart. Recorded live at the Pace Center in Parker, Colorado, the narrative serves as a moral fable for listeners of all ages.

The Generous Rafi vs. The Selfish Idris

The story introduces us to Rafi, an elderly man in a hillside village whose physical fragility—characterized by "joints as creaky as rusty hinges" and "arthritis"—is surpassed only by the warmth of his heart. Rafi is defined by his willingness to help others, whether by running errands for neighbors with broken ankles or knitting for families in need. In stark contrast, we meet his neighbor, Idris, an "anything-but-neighborly" man who prioritizes his own comfort above all else, even during a harsh, bitter winter that leaves Rafi without firewood.

The Feline Encounter

When Rafi is forced to venture out into the "wretched weather" to gather wood, he discovers a kitten "quivering and shivering" at the top of a tree. Despite his age and physical limitations, Rafi rescues the creature. He soon realizes this is no ordinary cat; it is Princess Patches, the daughter of the Cat King. His act of compassion grants him entry into the hidden "Palace of Cats," a place of "velvet sofas" and "golden lamps" where he is treated with royal hospitality. To show his gratitude, the King gifts Rafi two burlap bags containing nothing more than "onion and garlic peels."

The Transformation of Rewards

Rafi’s character is truly tested when he discovers the magical nature of the King's gift. Upon waking the next morning, he finds the bags filled with "silver and gold coins." His first instinct is not to hoard his wealth, but to share it with his community. He repairs his cottage, buys desks for students, and provides a new rooster for a farmer. Even when he approaches Idris, he offers a thoughtful gift—a leather dog collar for Idris's Rottweiler.

The Failure of Greed

Idris, driven by envy and "disbelief and desire" upon hearing of the windfall, rushes to the Cat Palace to demand his own bags of peels. Unlike Rafi, who acted out of genuine kindness, Idris is motivated solely by the prospect of profit. When he receives the same gift from the King and Princess, he treats them with disdain, lacking "so much as a thank you."

Ultimately, the magic of the Cat King’s gift reveals the character of the recipient. For Rafi, the "rich in kindness," the peels transformed into treasure. For Idris, who was "stinking selfish," the bags resulted in nothing but "moldy and slimy" rot. As the narrator concludes, the magic of the gift was that it transformed into whatever the recipient deserved, serving as a poignant reminder that true rewards often stem from the quality of our actions and the sincerity of our spirit.
