Tales of Obsession: A Deep Dive into the Mr. Ballin Podcast

This episode of the Mr. Ballin podcast explores the dark and consuming nature of obsession through three distinct, harrowing stories: "The First Floor," "The Shaman," and "The Raven-Haired Woman."

The First Floor: A Home Invaded

The first story recounts the terrifying experience of Melissa, a woman living alone who begins to suspect that her home is being violated. Initially, the signs were subtle—"hangup calls," "missing" household items like "plates, cups, and forks," and the inexplicable "plugging in" of her TV, which she obsessively unplugged to prevent fires. Her fear escalated when her TV channels began cycling independently, suggesting someone was interacting with her "skybox."

Melissa’s worst fears were confirmed when her brothers, who had been staying with her for protection, caught an intruder in the house. The assailant was revealed to be her mother’s former boyfriend, a man who had harbored an "inappropriate attraction" to her for years. He admitted to "breaking in almost every single night," turning a place of sanctuary into a site of psychological and physical terror.

The Shaman: A Cult of Death

The second story, "The Shaman," details the horrific crimes of Ahmad Siraji in Indonesia. After the body of a 21-year-old woman named Dewi was found buried up to her neck in a sugarcane field, police uncovered a mass grave containing at least 42 victims. Siraji, who claimed to be a "shaman" with "supernatural powers," convinced vulnerable women that he could grant them "everlasting beauty and riches."

His motive was rooted in a delusional "vivid dream" from 1986, where his deceased father instructed him to consume the saliva of 70 women to achieve "immortality." Siraji’s process was chillingly systematic: he would trick women into a ritual where they dug their own graves, then he would "strangle them to death" and forcibly extract their saliva. He buried them facing his house, believing their gazes provided him with "more power."

The Raven-Haired Woman: A Twisted Devotion

The final story follows Carl Tanzler, who became obsessed with a woman he believed was destined for him by God. As a child, he had visions of a "raven-haired woman" and was told by a noblewoman spirit that it was his "mission" to save her from illness. In 1926, he met Elena, a woman suffering from tuberculosis, and became convinced she was the woman from his dreams.

After Elena died, Tanzler’s grief transformed into a grotesque obsession. He built a mausoleum, spent years "crying and begging for Elena's forgiveness," and eventually exhumed her body, taking it home to live with him. He used "piano wire" to hold her skeleton together and applied "special wax" to her skin, attempting to preserve her in a state of normalcy. He even believed that launching her into the "stratosphere" would use radiation to "bring her back to life." His actions were eventually discovered by Elena’s sister, leading to a grim conclusion to a life defined by a fatal, delusional fixation.
