📋 Summary

The Founding of a Legacy

Jane Lathrop Stanford and her husband, Leland Stanford, were central figures of the Gilded Age, accumulating immense wealth through the Central Pacific Railroad. Often categorized as "robber barons," the couple sought to secure a lasting legacy by founding Leland Stanford Junior University following the tragic death of their only child, Leland Jr., at the age of 15. While the official narrative suggests the university was inspired by a dream, some accounts, including those of medium Maude Lord Drake, point to a seance. Regardless of its origin, the university was remarkably progressive for its time, offering free tuition, co-educational enrollment, and a non-denominational structure.

A Micromanaging Founder

Jane Stanford was deeply involved in the university's operations, often acting as a "micromanager" who held distinct ideas about its mission. Her influence extended to the appointment of David Starr Jordan, an ichthyologist and later university president. Their relationship was fraught with tension, particularly over Jane's interest in "spiritualism" and the occult, as well as her insistence on controlling faculty hiring and firing—most notably the controversial dismissal of professor Edward A. Ross due to his political affiliations, which triggered a national scandal regarding academic freedom.

The Poisoning Attempts

In January 1905, Jane survived an initial attempt on her life when she discovered that the water left on her nightstand had been tainted with rat poison. Fearing for her safety, she traveled to Hawaii. Despite the gravity of the incident, university president David Starr Jordan worked to suppress the news, fearing that a scandal would jeopardize the institution's reputation. He attempted to dismiss the poisoning as a misunderstanding, even though an investigation eventually confirmed the presence of strychnine.

The Mysterious Death in Hawaii

On February 28, 1905, while staying at the Moana Hotel in Honolulu, Jane Stanford died under suspicious circumstances. After consuming a mixture of baking soda and water provided by her secretary, Bertha Berner, Jane experienced violent, involuntary muscle clenching—classic symptoms of strychnine poisoning. She died shortly thereafter, famously declaring, "This is a horrible death to die."

The Cover-Up and Historical Reassessment

Following her death, a coroner's jury in Hawaii concluded that Jane had been murdered. However, Jordan launched a massive effort to rewrite the narrative. He commissioned an alternative report by a Dr. Waterhouse, who never examined the body but concluded that Jane had died of "heart failure" brought on by indigestion from eating "tongue sandwiches" and "undercooked gingerbread." This version was accepted by the public and the press, effectively burying the murder theory for nearly a century.

It was not until 2003 that Robert W.P. Cutler, a neurology professor at Stanford, challenged this orthodoxy in his book The Mysterious Death of Jane Stanford, noting that the original Hawaiian medical team had meticulously preserved evidence. More recently, historian Richard White’s book Who Killed Jane Stanford further scrutinized the case, suggesting that Bertha Berner—Jane's long-time secretary—had both the opportunity and potential motives, including a desire for her inheritance and exhaustion from her restrictive role. While the murder remains officially unsolved, contemporary scholarship strongly suggests that the "heart failure" explanation was a calculated cover-up by university leadership to protect the institution’s financial and moral standing.
