📋 Summary

The Enchanted Journey of Vaco

In this episode of Super Great Kids Stories, storyteller Tiernan Dujeb shares a captivating Finnish fairy tale known as "La Mouse Princess." The story centers on a farmer who, wishing for his three sons to find brides, instructs them to chop down trees and travel in the direction where the trees fall to find their future wives. While the two older brothers find paths leading to human settlements, the youngest son, Vaco, finds his tree pointing directly into the deep, mysterious forest.

An Unexpected Encounter

Venturing into the forest, Vaco discovers a charming hut where he meets a tiny mouse. Despite his initial skepticism—remarking, "But you're only a mouse"—he is charmed by her sweet demeanor and a song she sings about her love for him. Vaco decides to accept her as his sweetheart, showing a kindness that his brothers, who boast of brides with "rosiest red cheeks" or "long blonde hair," lack. Vaco remains loyal to his "dainty little thing, all dressed in velvet," even when faced with his brothers' mockery.

The Tests of Character

To prove their sweethearts' worth, the farmer demands two tests: baking bread and weaving a sample of cloth. Vaco, doubting that a mouse could perform such human tasks, is surprised when the little mouse rings a "small silver bell," summoning hundreds of mice to help her. She produces a loaf of "white bread" and a "beautiful soft scarf" woven from the "finest linen threads." These displays of skill and magic leave the brothers "nearly exploded in jealousy" and the farmer convinced that Vaco’s sweetheart must be a princess.

The Breaking of the Spell

When Vaco attempts to bring his sweetheart home, a man on a bridge, disgusted by the sight of the "nutshell carriage" and its mice servants, throws them into the river. Vaco, heartbroken, believes he has lost his true love. However, his grief is met with a miracle: a "golden carriage" emerges from the water, and inside sits a beautiful woman. She reveals she was under an "evil enchantment" that could only be broken by someone who loved her as a mouse and by the act of being thrown into the river. The story concludes with their marriage, serving as a poignant reminder that one should never be "mean to mice," as the "little furry creature" might be far more than they appear.
