📋 Summary

The Story of Lester Gale: A Modern Scrooge

In this special holiday episode of the Morbid podcast, hosts Ash and Elena present an original fiction tale written by John Allen titled The Meaning of Christmas. The story centers on Lester Lynn Gale, a man described as a "cold, calculating sociopath" and a "remorseless murderer of decorum, morality, and general good." Having spent years as a small-time grifter in Beelick, Kentucky, Lester’s life is defined by his inherent cowardice and his deep-seated hatred for the world. After a stint in prison, he finds himself working as a janitor at the Sister Rosemary Abernathy Foundling, an ancient orphanage he despises.

The Catalyst for Greed

Lester’s disdain for his life reaches a breaking point during the holiday season. While working at the orphanage, he encounters an influential woman named Miss Swain—a former orphan who rose to become a prestigious lawyer. She humbles Lester, forcing him to confront his pathetic status. Shortly thereafter, Lester becomes obsessed with the "Tickle Me Elmo" craze of the 1990s, viewing the toys as his ticket to a "goldmine" and a way to fund his escape from his miserable existence. His greed drives him to commit a series of thefts, targeting the orphanage and later a local shopping mall on Christmas Eve.

The Haunting of the Mall

As Lester attempts to offload his stolen goods, he begins to suffer from terrifying hallucinations. He repeatedly sees the face of Sister Rosemary Abernathy—the stern, judgmental nun from the orphanage’s portrait—appearing in reflections, store logos, and even on the faces of shoppers. Despite his attempts to drown his paranoia in alcohol and drugs, the visions intensify. His violent nature leads him to commit a horrific act of aggression against an elderly woman, which finally brings his criminal spree to a chaotic end.

A Macabre Conclusion

Lester’s demise is as poetic as it is gruesome. Attempting to escape security, he ends up dangling from a mall balcony. In his final moments, the entity of Sister Rosemary Abernathy crawls out of her portrait frame to confront him. Lester falls to his death, choking on the very pager he used to conduct his scams, while a Tickle Me Elmo toy lands on his face.

In a final ironic twist, Lester is not granted peace. Instead, he finds himself trapped for eternity in a painting hanging in the orphanage, forced to stare into the judging eyes of Sister Rosemary Abernathy forever. The story concludes with the orphanage children celebrating a joyous Christmas, while Lester remains "painted for eternity" as a janitor on his own name tag, finally learning the true meaning of Christmas through his own personal hell.
