Making History at NASA

Johnson’s perseverance eventually led to institutional recognition. After four years, she became the first woman at NACA to be credited as an author on a research report. Her expertise became critical during the Space Race. When NASA prepared for the Friendship 7 mission, astronaut John Glenn specifically requested her to "double-check the math" of the new IBM computers, trusting her accuracy with his life. As the mission succeeded and America made history, Johnson finally earned the "respect and admiration" she had long been denied.

A Lasting Legacy

Johnson’s contributions extended to the Apollo 11 moon landing, cementing her role in history. After a 33-year career at NASA, she retired in 1986, but her impact only grew in later years. In 2015, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Today, she is remembered not just as a brilliant mathematician, but as a "symbol of pride and achievement" who continues to inspire young girls to pursue careers in science and mathematics.
