📋 Summary

The Tragic Night of December 11, 2006

On the evening of December 11, 2006, in the quiet town of Erba, Italy, a horrific crime unfolded that would later be known as the "Urba Massacre." Two neighbors, walking past a local apartment complex, noticed smoke and flames emanating from the second-story home of 30-year-old Raffaella Castagna. Upon investigating, they discovered a scene of pure carnage. They managed to rescue a neighbor, Mr. Cherubini, but the apartment was a death trap. Inside, authorities eventually recovered the bodies of Raffaella, her 60-year-old mother, Paola Galli, her two-year-old son, Yusuf, and their upstairs neighbor, Mrs. Cherubini.

The Investigation and Initial Suspicions

Initially, the police and the media focused their suspicion on Raffaella’s husband, Azouz Marzouk. Given his past history of "dealing drugs" and his status as a recent release from prison under a "mass pardon," he was an easy target for speculation. However, Azouz held a "rock-solid alibi," as he had been visiting his family in Tunisia at the time of the murders. With the primary suspect cleared, investigators were forced to look closer at the internal dynamics of the apartment complex.

Uncovering the Deadly Feud

As police dug deeper into the lives of the Castagna family, they uncovered a long-standing, toxic feud between the victims and their neighbors, Olindo Romano and his wife, Rosa. Olindo, described as an "awkward and shy" garbage collector, and his wife, Rosa, a fastidious house cleaner, had harbored a deep-seated hatred for the Castagnas. The conflict stemmed from their intolerance for the noise of daily life—specifically the sounds of a toddler, Yusuf, playing with his toys and "riding his scooter." This frustration had escalated over a year, leading to a physical altercation in December 2005 and a subsequent lawsuit filed by Raffaella against the couple.

The Brutal Confession

When police brought Olindo and Rosa in for questioning, the couple provided a detailed, chilling confession that shocked the world. They admitted to orchestrating the murders to silence the Castagnas permanently. On the night of the attack, they lured Raffaella to the door by claiming they were there to "accept the terms" of a financial settlement regarding their feud.

Once inside, the violence was systematic and savage. Olindo and Rosa used a "heavy metal bar with a sharpened tip" and kitchen knives to slaughter the family. Rosa, showing no remorse, admitted to the police that she was the one who "slit the boy's throat." After the murders, they set multiple fires in the apartment to "cover up evidence" of their crimes. Their path of destruction continued when they intercepted the neighbors, the Cherubinis, who had rushed down to investigate the smoke. Mr. Cherubini survived only due to a "congenital malformation of his carotid artery," which prevented him from bleeding out before medical help arrived.

Justice and Aftermath

Despite later attempting to withdraw their confessions, the evidence against Olindo and Rosa was overwhelming. Investigators had "bugged" their home, capturing audio of Rosa whispering to Olindo, "see how peaceful it is now. We can finally sleep well." Furthermore, Mr. Cherubini recovered from his coma to positively identify them as his attackers. In 2008, both were found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. The Erba Massacre remains a haunting reminder of how a petty grievance, fueled by obsessive intolerance, can escalate into an unimaginable tragedy.
