The Predator in Paradise: The Deception and Murder of Tom and Jackie Hawks

The Dream and the Deception

Tom and Jackie Hawks, a couple who spent years dreaming of a life on the water, finally achieved their goal by selling their home and purchasing a trawler aptly named Well-Deserved. For the couple, the sea represented "a sense of adventure and maybe some self accomplishment." Their idyllic life, however, took a turn when they decided to sell their boat to return to Arizona to be closer to their new grandson. Enter Skyler DeLeon, a man who presented himself as a "freshly scrubbed family man" and a former child actor from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. To the Hawks, who were used to meeting all kinds of people, Skyler appeared to be a "legitimate prospective buyer."

The Unraveling of a Lie

As the Hawks disappeared without a trace, red flags began to emerge. Tom’s brother, Jim Hawks, an ex-police chief, grew suspicious when he visited the Well-Deserved and found it in a state of "sloppiness Tom would never have tolerated." Furthermore, the presence of Tom’s custom surfboard and wetsuits on the boat contradicted the narrative that he had sold the vessel and moved on. Jim discovered that "Skyler DeLeon" was an alias for John Jacobson, a man with a history of deceit. Despite Jim’s efforts to alert the authorities, Skyler initially managed to convince detectives of a complex, albeit fabricated, story involving drug money and real estate investments in Mexico, even going so far as to claim he had "laundered this money" from a "narcotics transaction."

The Cold-Blooded Reality

The investigation took a dark turn when detectives discovered that Skyler had been linked to a previous, cold case: the murder of John "JP" Jarvie, who had been killed near Ensenada, Mexico. The facade finally crumbled when the notary public involved in the boat sale confessed that Skyler had paid her $2,000 to "backdate and notarize" the documents, admitting she had never actually met the Hawks.

The full horror was revealed through the confession of Alonzo Machain, an accomplice. Machain described how Skyler and his gang took the Hawks out to sea, tasered them, and tied them together, "back to back." In a final act of cruelty, Skyler tied the couple to the boat's anchor and threw them into the ocean while they were still alive. As the prosecutor noted, the realization that they were alive when cast overboard was "more horrific than anyone imagined."

The Mastermind's Lack of Remorse

Even after his conviction and while sitting on death row, Skyler DeLeon remained a "big pretender." In an interview, he attempted to offer a superficial apology, stating he was "sorry about some of the circumstances," but he could not summon any genuine empathy. He framed the double murder as a "business proposition" and attempted to shift blame onto his wife and father. His history of lies—from fake military service to invented child acting success—revealed a man who viewed people as mere "means to an end."

Conclusion

Tom and Jackie Hawks were victims of their own kindness. As their son Ryan observed, they had a "tendency to see the best in anyone." They were ultimately killed in the very ocean that had brought them so much joy, betrayed by a predator who successfully manipulated their trust. Skyler DeLeon was sentenced to death, a fitting end for a man who, as the interviewer put it, had "sanded down" the reality of his heinous crimes into a cold, transactional narrative.
