The King's Face: A Lesson in Wisdom and Humility

Introduction: The Burden of Leadership

In the folktale "The King's Face," a new monarch ascends to the throne, finding himself immediately surrounded by "royal advisors" who claim to know what is best for the kingdom. These advisors, characterized by their high-and-mighty attitudes and detachment from reality, insist that commoners are not "smart enough to know what they want." The young king, however, recognizes a disconnect; he realizes that to be a fair ruler, he must understand how his "citizens live" and what they truly need, rather than relying on the whispers of those who have never "stepped foot outside the palace."

The Farmer’s Riddle

Determined to connect with his people, the king disguises himself as a commoner and ventures into the countryside. He encounters a humble farmer who demonstrates profound wisdom. When the king asks how the farmer manages his meager earnings of "three silver coins" a week, the farmer presents a cryptic riddle: "The first coin I eat. The second coin, I loan out. And the third coin, I give back."

This simple, yet elegant philosophy reveals the farmer’s character:

  • The first coin is used to "feed myself."
  • The second is a loan to his children, ensuring his future support when he is "grizzled and gray."
  • The third is given back to his mother to "repay her for everything she's done for me."

Intrigued by the farmer's cleverness, the king demands a promise: the farmer must not share the solution until he has seen the king's face "100 times."

The Advisors’ Failure and Greed

Back at the palace, the king challenges his advisors to solve the riddle, promising a promotion to "chief advisor" for the answer. The advisors, driven by arrogance and a belief that they are "far more clever than any of them could ever be," eventually resort to stalking the farmer. They find him in the rain, their "fancy shoes splattered with mud," and attempt to bribe him with a purse containing 100 newly minted coins, each bearing the king's likeness. They greedily trade the wealth of the kingdom to solve a riddle they could not comprehend on their own.

The Resolution: Wisdom Prevails

The farmer accepts 99 coins and reveals the answer. When the advisors proudly report back to the king, they are met with his suspicion. Upon being summoned, the farmer brilliantly outsmarts the king’s trap. He explains that he has indeed seen the king's face 100 times: once during their initial meeting, and 99 times when the advisors handed him the bag of coins, as each of the 99 coins bore the "royal face."

Conclusion: A New Order

The story concludes with a shift in power. The farmer, proving his integrity and sharp intellect, becomes the new chief advisor. The former advisors are demoted to "planting and weeding out in the royal fields," a fitting end for those who were out of touch with the soil and the people. The farmer continues his practice of splitting his earnings, reminding the audience of the importance of gratitude and honoring one's roots. This tale serves as a powerful reminder that true wisdom often resides in the most unexpected places, and that leadership requires both empathy and a genuine connection to the realities of everyday life.
