📋 Summary

The Naha Disappearances: A Descent into Darkness

In November 1990, the city of Naha, China, became the epicenter of a chilling mystery. What began as a series of unexplained disappearances involving sex workers eventually escalated into a multi-victim serial killing spree that haunted the region. The story centers on Su Lixia, a 26-year-old kindergarten teacher who, while fleeing a contentious marriage, crossed paths with a man named Jia Wang at a train station.

The Encounter and the Trap

Su Lixia, feeling vulnerable and alone, was approached by Jia, a man described as "exceptionally well-dressed" and "handsome." After offering her a tissue and a sympathetic ear, Jia lured her to his home under the guise of a job opportunity. The facade of a "beautifully maintained" home quickly dissolved into a nightmare. After drinking a drugged tea, Su lost consciousness, only to awaken in a "pit in the basement" filled with decaying bodies.

The Making of a Murderer

Instead of killing Su, Jia presented her with a horrific ultimatum: help him murder others, or die. Su, broken and desperate, chose to survive. She began acting as a lure, identifying targets at the train station and bringing them to Jia’s house. The pattern of victims shifted from sex workers to "random men"—including the first male victim reported by an elderly couple to Officer Zhang. Jia would record these gruesome acts, effectively trapping his accomplices in a web of complicity. He successfully coerced four others, including his ex-wife, into his killing scheme, maintaining "absolute control" over them.

The Discovery

For nearly a year, the police were baffled. Despite 26 people going missing, there was "no evidence" and "no bodies." The breakthrough occurred in October 1991, nearly 1,700 miles away from Naha, when police stopped Jia and two accomplices for drug possession. During the interrogation, an officer’s act of kindness—offering a blanket and a sympathetic ear—prompted Su to "crack" and confess. She urged the police to see "what’s in Jia’s house," claiming it was far worse than the drugs.

The Final Revelation

When Officer Zhang and his team raided the house, they discovered a "horrible, horrible smell" emanating from the basement. Upon entering the pit, they found 42 bodies—24 women and 18 men. The sheer scale of the atrocity confirmed that Jia Wang was a prolific serial killer. The investigation revealed that the victims were lured, incapacitated, and eventually discarded into the pit.

Conclusion and Aftermath

Jia Wang and his four coerced accomplices, including Su Lixia, were sentenced to death and executed on January 24, 1992. The city of Naha remains infamous for these events, now often referred to as "Bandit City." This story serves as a dark exploration of human manipulation, the fragility of safety, and the horrific lengths to which individuals will go when stripped of their agency under the threat of death.
