📋 Summary

The Disappearance of Lorraine Hendricks

In March 1990, the life of 43-year-old Lorraine Hendricks, a successful businesswoman and devoted mother from Jacksonville, Florida, was cut short. While driving south on I-95 toward Fort Lauderdale to handle a real estate matter, Lorraine vanished. Her family became frantic when she failed to meet her realtor, and a massive search ensued. Her gray Honda Accord was eventually discovered abandoned on the shoulder of I-95 in Indian River County, leading law enforcement to mark the spot with a "big red X." Despite initial searches of the surrounding area, investigators found no immediate leads, and Lorraine’s whereabouts remained a chilling mystery.

The Discovery in the Median Forest

Detective Phil Williams, leading the investigation, felt a persistent hunch that the answer lay within the dense, wooded median strip of the highway. On March 8, 1990, after multiple failed attempts by search teams and helicopters to penetrate the "thick canopy of trees," Detective Williams conducted a personal foot search. Deep within the dark, insect-filled forest, he discovered a horrific scene: the decomposed body of Lorraine Hendricks, hidden under a mound of "dead grass and pine needles." It was clear that she had been kidnapped, violated, and brutally murdered.

A Pattern of Abuse and Obsession

Parallel to the murder investigation, the narrative introduces Sandy Wessendorf, a woman living in terror of her husband, Tim Harris. Sandy, a mother of two, suffered under a marriage defined by psychological and physical abuse. Her husband, a man who controlled her through surveillance, threats, and "sharp pinches," had become increasingly erratic. Sandy discovered he was leading a double life and was obsessed with keeping her under his thumb, even going so far as to install "tape recorders" in their home to monitor her conversations. The situation reached a breaking point when Tim, 10 inches taller and 70 pounds heavier than his wife, held her at gunpoint and attempted to handcuff her, forcing her to feign reconciliation to survive.

The Predator in Uniform

As Detective Williams dug deeper into the records of I-95, he realized that Highway Patrol Officer Tim Harris—the very man who had offered to help search the forest with his K-9 unit—had no alibi. Through investigative work and a domestic violence complaint filed by Sandy, police linked Harris to the crime. It was revealed that Harris had a history of abusing his authority, often targeting solo female drivers and forcing them into compromising situations. Investigators reconstructed the event: Harris had pulled Lorraine over, forced her into his cruiser, and dragged her into the woods, where he projected his rage toward his own wife onto Lorraine, ultimately breaking her neck.

Justice Served

Following the discovery of the domestic violence charge and the mounting evidence, Tim Harris was cornered. On April 7, 1990, he confessed to the murder of Lorraine Hendricks. Rather than facing a jury trial, he pleaded no contest to first-degree murder charges in September 1990 and was sentenced to life in prison. The case remains a haunting reminder of the dangers lurking on the roadside and the tragic intersection of a predator’s unchecked power and a woman’s desperate struggle for freedom.

In March of 1990, a detective in Florida who was investigating a missing person case decided to search a forested area right off of a busy highway.
This forest had been searched before, but this detective just had a hunch that something could still be in there.
And so he stepped into the thick rows of trees and began walking deeper into the forest.
After a while, he was so far inside that he couldn't hear the highway anymore.
All he could hear was the buzzing of insects all around him.
At some point the area in front of him became so thick he didn't know if he could physically get through it, but he decided he would try to push just a little bit further.
