📋 Summary

The Perils of Hitchhiking: Three Cautionary Tales

This podcast episode explores the dark and dangerous realities of hitchhiking through three distinct, harrowing stories. Each narrative serves as a brutal "cautionary tale," highlighting the life-altering consequences of trusting strangers and the unpredictable nature of violence.

The Hitchhiker: A Fatal Coincidence

In June 1991, Charles Holden experienced a terrifying encounter in Harrington, Delaware. After initially refusing to give a ride to a stranger named Gilbert Cannon, Charles relented out of pity. The situation quickly escalated when Cannon attempted a carjacking using a screwdriver. Charles managed to escape, but the ordeal was far from over. In a tragic turn of events, Cannon broke into a nearby house seeking refuge, which happened to be the home of Charles’s 70-year-old mother, Dorothy. Cannon murdered Dorothy with the same screwdriver. The investigation revealed the entire sequence was a "horrible coincidence"; Cannon had no idea the house belonged to the man he had just attempted to rob.

That Didn't Age Well: A Masked Predator

This story follows Harold Bray, a sheriff who, while flying over Colorado in 1982, spotted a distress signal from a stranded vehicle on the treacherous, unmaintained Gwinella Pass. His intervention saved the life of Alan Phillips, who appeared to be a victim of a winter storm. For 38 years, the incident was celebrated as a "miracle at Gwinella Pass." However, in 2020, DNA evidence revealed a horrific truth: Phillips had murdered two hitchhikers, Annette Schnee and Barbara Oberholzer, just hours before his "rescue." His vehicle had become stuck only because he was attempting to flee the scene of his crimes. The "miracle" narrative did not age well, as it masked the actions of a calculated killer.

Five Hacks: The Survival of Mary Vincent

The final and most graphic story details the 1978 assault of 15-year-old runaway Mary Vincent. After accepting a ride from Lawrence Singleton, Mary was subjected to hours of torture, ultimately resulting in Singleton using a hatchet to sever both of her arms. Left for dead in a culvert, Mary survived through sheer willpower and a desperate instinct to play dead. She crawled to safety and eventually provided the testimony that led to Singleton's conviction. Despite his release after only 14 years—which led to the murder of another woman, Roxanne Hayes—Mary’s subsequent testimony ensured he would die in prison. Her survival sparked the creation of the "Lawrence Singleton Bill," which mandates harsher sentencing for cases involving torture.

Conclusion

These stories collectively underscore the extreme risks associated with hitchhiking—a practice once considered "socially acceptable" but now viewed as "unfathomably dangerous." From random acts of violence to the long-term trauma inflicted on survivors, these accounts serve as a grim reminder of why hitchhiking remains a perilous endeavor.
