The Hiding Place: Outsmarting the Greedy

In the charming folktale "The Hiding Place," adapted from Egyptian and Jewish traditions, we follow the journey of Solomon the Peddler, a hardworking man whose life takes an unexpected turn due to the avarice of a local official. This story serves as a classic narrative on how wit and collaboration can overcome injustice.

The Peddler’s Predicament

Solomon, a humble merchant who hawked his "hodgepodge of wares" from city to city, finally saved enough to take a vacation. Upon arriving at a new city, he decided to bury his "cash box filled with 500 silver pieces" in a field near a grove of trees to keep it safe. However, upon his return, he discovered his treasure was gone. Following a trail of "strange footprints," he tracked the theft to a massive house belonging to the city's mayor, whom he caught through an open window, "counting silver pieces" that clearly belonged to him.

A Clever Alliance

Unable to confront the powerful and "legendary" mayor directly, Solomon sought work at a local grocery store. There, he met Dahlia, the shop owner, who was familiar with the mayor’s reputation for "arrogance and greed." Recognizing an opportunity to "fight greed with greed," Dahlia concocted a brilliant plan to reclaim Solomon's stolen silver.

The Sting Operation

The duo approached the mayor’s residence, with Dahlia presenting a "satin pouch" filled with cheap "metal buttons," which they convinced the mayor contained 300 silver pieces. By playing on the mayor's insatiable desire for wealth, they tricked him into believing that Solomon had even more money hidden elsewhere. Greedily, the mayor advised Solomon to bury the pouch with the rest of his silver, assuming he could simply steal the entire lot once the peddler left.

The Tables Turned

As the mayor scurried off to bury the "treasure" in the grove, Solomon and Dahlia waited for their moment. After the mayor departed, they recovered the original cash box. In a final act of poetic justice, they swapped the contents: the mayor’s stolen silver was returned to Solomon, and the cash box was refilled with the worthless metal buttons.

When the mayor returned to the grove that night, he unearthed the box, only to find he had been "beaten by his own greed." He was left with nothing but "trinkets instead of treasure," effectively teaching the arrogant leader a lesson that his "grasping ways" would ultimately lead to his own downfall.
