📋 Summary

The Rising Star of Gravel Racing

In September 2021, Anna Mariah Wilson, affectionately known as "Mo," emerged as a formidable talent in the world of professional gravel racing. Described as having "brute athleticism" offset by a "bright smile" and an "outgoing personality," Mo quickly became the face of the sport. Her path crossed with Colin Strickland, one of the most famous male gravel racers globally, at a race in Idaho. This encounter sparked a "horrible chain of events," as the two elite athletes began a romantic relationship, complicating the professional and personal life of Mo Wilson.

A Romantic Getaway and Growing Tensions

Seeking to foster their connection, Mo and Colin spent time in Marfa, Texas, a town known for being a "perfect place for a romantic getaway." While they focused on honing their cycling skills, the relationship faced immediate hurdles. Mo was aware that Colin had previously been involved with Caitlin Armstrong. Despite Colin's claims that he and Caitlin had split up, it was evident that the situation was far from resolved. Mo lived in Vermont, while Colin remained in Texas, making their relationship an "uphill battle from the start."

The Fatal Night in Austin

On May 11, 2022, Mo visited Austin, Texas, for a race. After spending the day with Colin, including a visit to the Deep Eddy Pool, she returned to a friend's apartment. Shortly after arriving, Mo was brutally murdered. Her friend returned home to find Mo's body, the bathroom "spattered with blood," and Mo suffering from three gunshot wounds. The scene appeared staged to look like a "robbery gone wrong," as Mo’s expensive gravel bike had been removed, only to be found later "abandoned in a thick growth of bamboo" nearby.

The Investigation and the Jealousy Factor

Detectives Richard Spitler and Katie Connor quickly identified the primary suspects. Video doorbell footage captured a black Jeep Cherokee with a bike rack near the crime scene, a vehicle that belonged to Colin Strickland’s live-in girlfriend, Caitlin Armstrong. During interviews, Colin appeared evasive, initially lying about knowing Mo, while Caitlin displayed the behavior of a "jealous girlfriend." While police found a 9mm pistol in the couple's home that matched the ballistics of the crime scene, a bureaucratic error—an incorrect date of birth on an outstanding warrant for a previous unpaid Botox bill—led to Caitlin’s temporary release.

The Fugitive and the Final Resolution

Seizing her window of opportunity, Caitlin Armstrong fled. She sold her vehicle, wiped her social media presence, and traveled to Costa Rica, where she adopted the pseudonym "Ari Martin." In an attempt to evade capture, she underwent plastic surgery to "erase her individuality" and appear generic. However, US Marshal Amir Perez identified her in the town of Santa Teresa by a bandage over her nose. Upon being brought back to the United States, Armstrong confessed to the murder. It was revealed that she had acted alone, driven by jealousy, and she was subsequently sentenced to 90 years in prison. The tragedy left the gravel racing community mourning the loss of a vibrant athlete whose life was cut short by a calculated and senseless act of violence.
