One of the most intriguing hypotheses proposed by researchers is that the wrasse’s slimy lips act as a "barrier or protective shield." This mucus layer likely prevents the fish from being stung by the coral's toxic cells during the feeding process. After the wrasse finishes its "kiss," it leaves behind a visible mark on the coral, a testament to its unique and highly effective survival strategy.
