In 2021, NASA scientist Imre Friedman discovered "minerals inside a Martian rock" arranged in a way that suggests they were once part of a "bacterium." Friedman noted that studying alien life is like trying to connect two points with only one piece of information—life on Earth. The Challenge of Distant Exoplanets

Beyond our solar system, the search continues. In 2025, researchers identified "dimethyl sulfide (DMS)" in the atmosphere of the exoplanet K2-18b, a gas typically produced by living things. However, experts remain cautious. Caroline Pule Gorayeb from the University of Chicago warned that "different information methods always give somewhat different results." Because the data regarding DMS was inconsistent and limited, experts emphasize that we have yet to obtain enough information to definitively prove that life exists on such distant worlds.

Why Haven't We Found Anyone?

If the universe is teeming with potential, why is there no contact? Several theories attempt to explain the silence:

  1. The Scale of the Universe: The universe is simply "too big," making it impossible for distant civilizations to reach us.
  2. Incompatibility: Alien life might be so fundamentally different that we cannot recognize or "understand it."
  3. Intelligence Gaps: Human-level intelligence may be rare, or advanced aliens may be so intelligent that they simply "do not care about humans."

As the American scientist Stephen Jay Gould once remarked, understanding the motivations of even our own neighbors is difficult enough; projecting those thoughts onto an alien intelligence is nearly impossible.

The Significance of Our Solitude

Ultimately, the Fermi Paradox forces us to confront the possibility that we are "truly alone." If Earth is the only place harboring life, it raises profound questions about our role in protecting our planet. Whether we eventually find companions among the stars or discover that we are the sole occupants of the cosmos, the answer to Fermi’s question will undoubtedly "change everything" for the future of humanity. As we continue to look outward, the paradox remains a reminder of both the mystery of the universe and the fragile, unique nature of life on Earth.
